Learning French in Montpellier
by Siobhanireland
I will be staying in Montpellier in July to learn French would like to visit Carcassonne and Perpignan. Does anyone have any advice on places for theatre or music in the evening (jazz, classical or just laid back local) in Montpellier in particular. Is there much to do in Carcassonne or Perpignan? Is it easy to get around by train?
Merci d'avance pour votre aide.

The Camargue is quite close to Montpellier and very impressive, particularly les trois Saint Maries de Mer. We also visited Avignon from Montpellier and had a great time. I found Carcasonne very touristy

Carcassonne does get a very large number of tourusts and there are soome things that are strictly for the tourists. Despite that, the city is of huge historical importance and is among the most impressive gallo-roman and medieval sites anywhere. I have been to Carcassonne several times over the last 20 years and would never leave it out of a trip to Languedoc.
It has a parallel in the walled city of Aigues Mortes, the first port built by the kingdom of France on the Mediterranean. This is also close to Montpellier, on the edge of the Camargue.

I like all suggestions a lot. You mentioned theatre, it made me think of Pezenas, lovely old town near Montpellier, Beziers, Agde. Buses from Montpellier to Pezenas every hour, I don't know about trains (don't think Pezenas has a train station.)
Pezenas has a famous summer theatre, with lots of animation everywhere. Also many artisans shops to visit, great place for antiques and bric-a-brac. Really a place I wouldn't miss.

Check out the wonderful outdoor cafes ! Make sure not to miss the 'Place de la Comédie'
This is the large 'square' in front of the Opera. The center of life in Montpellier. Here, you can sit out on the square and have an apéritif, a meal, or just a coffee, at almost an time of the day or night and just watch the world go by. Just a great place.. the people were fantiastic
Millau
by JLBG
There are several reasons for visiting Millau. This is the town where José Bové and his friends dismantled in 2002 a Mac Do that was to open a few days later and this is the town that has given its name to the ''Viaduc de Millau'' (Millau's viaduct) finished in May 28th 2004.
In the old city of Millau, weekly city market plays a main part in the city life.
The Water Tower of the Promenade du Peyrou
by hquittner
At the depth of the Promenade of Peyrou stands the chateau d'eau a most elegant structure and a nearby is the eastern end of the 880 m long aqueduct, a most unexpected creation, carrying into the city the waters for the town. Just as surprising is the Corinthian Temple which acts as a reservoir at this point with its handsome shape.

"a wonderful starting point in Southern France"
I first went to Montpellier to study in Paul Valery University, in 1993. ..Time goes so quickly! It's already more than 10 years ago!
When I was there at fist, I was mostly interested to make the most of my free time by travelling to as many places around Southern France, as I financially could.
Then I as attracted by this town. Because of its universities, one can meet many lovely people from all sorts of places. And the town is embracing this phenomenon. The local people are now used to all these foreigners taht are visiting their homeplace, some for 3-4 years, some for just brief holidays.
Montpellier is primarily a University town, just like Cambridge: its University dates back to the 12th century. But it combines this historic past with a vibrant modern town that embraces the youth that comes and goes from this place.
I have so many things i'd like to share with anyone that will happen to read this page, I just don't know where to start.
I am not famous for being organised so it will take some time to assemble this page.
Bienvenus to my own piece of Montpellier...

The building would be high on the site of a church of the time wisigothe
When Carcassonne becomes royal possession the Romance cathedral must be entirely destroyed and replaced by the Gothic style. For lack of appropriations, all will not be destroyed, the nave will be saved. It A was necessary to make a junction between the Romance nave with restricted dimensions and the Gothic transept intended for a more significant building
"Coullior........"
Collioure is a typical Mediterranean fortified city, with a port overlooked by a
royal chateau (12th-14th century). Its attractive site, along the Cote
Vermeille, or Gilded Coast, and historic charm make it an important center for
tourists and artists. Many painters, including Picasso and Matisse have been
attracted by the exceptionally brilliant light and colour. The tower of the 17th
century church formerly served as a lighthouse; its altarpiece is considered a
masterpiece of Calatan Baroque
