How safe is Montpellier?
by Makaveli2007
I bet reading this youll want to shout out "its very safe!":-). But anyways, the other day I read a forum post about cities in southern France, where somebody from Pologne who moved to Marseille and lived there for years said he had recently moved to Montpellier and had (literally) gotten beat up 2 times. I remember one of those times was at night in the train station area or something (and then said he thought Marseille, which many people think of as dangerous, is a lot safer).
Most other people however said they never thought Montpellier was dangerous, at all. I remember a woman saying she thought Avignon scared her a bit at night or something whereas Montpellier didnt at all (but then again it isnt so much the "feeling" whether u feel its dangerous or not, but what actually happens, I guess..some people might have good some people bad experiences and draw their conclusions accordingly).
But, well..anyways, Id like to hear some input? I wouldnt really talk about this, because in my city of 100.000 in Germany somebody might get lucky and get beat up, too (though most people dont ever run into a situation like this). But reading it happened to him twice made me think a bit. However, it might have just been a random forum post..aka a troll who thought it was funny? you never know..

I several times passed through Montpellier, it has become an important rail hub because of the TGV terminal. As such, I only know this city during daylight, in suimmer, and enjoyed its sinny and colorful atmosphere. Last time, however, I read some shocking tales in the daily news column of the Montpellier newspaper, including murder and rapes. It left me with a sort of feeling that youth crime was out of proportion in this relatively small city (about the size of my hometown).
BTW: whre exactly are you from? Please give a brief introduction in the VT member page. Tks.
Travel Tips for Montpellier
Trompe d'oeil
by Kate-Me
These Trompe d'oeil (trick of the eye) murals are among my very favorite memories of our afternoon walk of Montpellier, and even better as we just came across them, not having known they were there.
On the last two, there's even a reflection painted on the painted window of the building.
La Grande-Motte
by salinhopt
La Grande Motte, a seaside resort famous for its pyramid-shaped architecture, occupies a wonderful position on the Mediterranean coast. Surrounded by greenery, it boasts more than 1,000 acres of parks and protected natural sites, more than a third of its area.
The whole resort has been planned with the port at its heart, and like a ship itself, the town moves to the rhythm of the winds, the tides, the sun and the skies.
Town Hall
by salinhopt
The city contains Roman ruins. The three square towers of the fortified Palais des Archeveques, date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The Gothic-style town hall was added to the palace only in the 19th century. The building now houses two museums that contain collections of paintings, ceramics, and Roman artifacts.

Montpellier, la vie en Rose
by margaux
Hi there!
This beautiful city has stolen my heart. We go here every year to see what has changed and what not. We walk through the small streets, go up to the arc the triomph to see all of the city and then down to the shopping mall. The streets are full of trees and really fresh in summer. The jardin des plantes really is an oase of peace and calme and the restaurants serve delicious food.
Not far from Montpellier is the sea, with nice beaches and not to forget la Camargue.
In a while my pictures will be added.
