Everyday Indoor Morning Market
by pigletsmom
Narbonne has an indoor market that is quite fun and tasty.
It is located in an old Victorian building, just south across the canal from the Hotel de Ville Square. I believe the market is from 8am ot 1pm. It holds permanent stalls for produce, baked goods and fish, amoung other food items. You can get different types of olives and marinated vegtables, pastries, and fresh poultry and beef. The mix of smells when you walk in is just fantastic, it makes you hugry just entering the building. It gives you a taste of the local culture. I think I was the only tourist in the market. The market is almost directly across the canal from the parking lot. This traditional market has been going on for over 100 years.
The Medieval Town of Lagrasse
by pigletsmom
Just about 45 minutes away by car, there is the extraordinary town of Lagrasse. Very beautiful and untouched. The road signs are not well posted, make sure you have a good map. Beautiul old town that includes a 11th century Abbey. Don't miss La Grasse if you're in the area. One of the highlights of my trip.
The Inner Court Yard of the Neuf Palais
by hquittner
The main facade inside the courtyard is the Grand Escalier and Balustrade. While at the southwest edge are the upper reaches of the Donjon of Gilles-Aycelin. At the east is the Tower St. Martial and running inward are the outer exit and the inner parts of the Passage de l'Ancre with a fine vaulted area. One of the sections contains the Salle des Synodes which leads is the Audience room, somewhat decreased in height in more recent times but still impressive. From here one visits the Art and History Museum.
Narbonne in Langeudoc

"A lovely small city with a canal and nearby beach"
I read in a guidebook once to skip Narbonne, that it was unattractive and there was nothing to see. We were camping nearby once and decided to see what was there. Were we surprised! Narbonne is a very pretty and busy small city. There is a canal running through it and art installations along the banks in addition to the boats and nearby cafes. The shopkeepers are friendly; the food is excellent and there is plenty to see and do, including a wonderful beach nearby.
Don't miss a visit to the cathedral downtown. The stained glass is spectacular.
"Cathedral of St.-Just and St.-Pasteur"
This is a lovely cathedral right downtown with lots of restaurants nearby and a central outdoor market. Inside the church there is beautiful stained glass. You can see the reflections through the stained glass in this very peaceful side chapel.
"Time to relax"
One of the things we loved about Narbonne is that it has so many parks and trees. This lady looked so comfortable sitting under a tree on a warm day reading her book. There were local teenagers walking through the park and mothers wheeling youngsters in their prams. What a lovely setting.
