Hi,
I am going to be working at a campsite called Le Ranc Davaine for 6 months. I am taking my car but my family will be coming to visit using the Ryanair flights. Is it possible for them to get to Ruoms by bus or train so that I can collect them from there. I am hoping to do some checking out of this situation on my days off to see how feasible it is for someone to find this site just using public transport.
Many thanks
I've looked at the campsite site in English:
http://www.camping-ranc-davaine.fr/campsite_ardeche.html
and at the Nimes bus info site:
http://www.tangobus.fr/index.asp
Your family will anyway need to get the airport bus into Nimes (it meets the Ryanair flights and will drop them at the station if they ask).
Then I think it might be easiest to get the train to Ales (about an hour's drive from Ruoms).
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/horaires
will give you times, details and fares in French.
I can't find any buses on the Nimes bus info site:
http://www.tangobus.fr/index.asp
It might be a good idea to contact the Ales tourist information office about possible buses from there to Ruoms:
Office de Tourisme
Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, 30100 Alès, France

I am making best guesses here: I've been to Nimes and Avignon, but not explored the area where the campsite is located.
Hopefully another VT-er will have more info.
Nimes to Ruoms is 99km, by the way, around 1h 45m driving time.
Looking at the map, one of the nearest towns from Ruoms is Ales.
It is possible to use bus or train to get from Nimes city to Ales. Ales is about one hour by car or 52 kms from RUOMS. And about the same from Nimes.
This shows a winter timetable on the railway TER - on a line that runs from Montpellier to Clermont Ferrand :

main page for TER Languedoc Rousillon is here:

This web shows some bus details and times:

and this is their map of routes.

Maybe there is some bus to Ruoms but have not seen it so far. Bonne chance !
The area is wonderful but not the easiest top access.

Did you know that the GARD ROMAN AQUADUCT is only the most spectacular and best preserved piece of engineering in a magnificent 50km (30 miles) aquaduct that crosses the River Gard, circumvents hills, goes underground and resurfaces again taking water from the source of the Eure River near Uzes to Roman Nimes.
Take a look at the Carree. It looks almost out of place in the centre of town, but still interesting. Inside is a small museum if you like, but just sitting outside on the steps eating lunch is great enough!
The photo shows la Tour Magne, part of the old Roman walls, on the hill behind le Jardin. It's a bit of a hike to the top of the hill to see this ruined tower, but it's through a nice park known as Mont Cavalier.
Nimes and the surrounding countryside have many roman buildings and monuments. I lived in a small village called Bellgarde, and going to Nimes for a night out seemed like going to a metropolis. It is,however, rather small. The ampitheatre is a must see, as is the maison carree and surrounding area with lots of cafes and restaurants. Jardin de la fontaine is also lovely, and you will see a lot of marriages going on here in good weather. It is good for shopping, plenty of parking and all in a good compact area. An hours drive away is the Pont du Gard, a massive roman bridge, can be seen miles around.
The streets are clean and well laid out. The shops are good and there is a real southern atmosphere. Between the maison caree and the ampitheatre (les arenes) there are plenty of cafes and good restaurants of all sorts down the side streets. Along the road from the arenes to the maison carree is the library and museum, and on the street opposite the maison carree is the tourist office. Les halles are also a good place to pick up a bargain on a bad day.
lots of old roman things about here. i am too uncultured to appreciate them, but some of you might. the arenes are a must, but all around nimes are plenty of statues and monuments. also, if you go into the surrounding countryside there are lots of old roman roads and monuments along the roads, as well as good wine tasting places!
