visit les Arènes, but not necessarily when there is a bull fight!
The Maison Carrée is worth a visit, too.
Not far from Nîmes, you must visit the Pont du Gard. Don't rush the visit, the whole scenery around the place is fabulaous.
Not far from Nîmes, visit the Pont Flavien. Little known, but well worth a stop.
SAINT-GILLES -- TOWN HALL
by LoriPori
On September 23 and 24, Hans, Wim and I stayed at this charming little town of Saint-Gilles. We decided to get a hotel here, because of its central location. It is southeast of Nimes, west of Arles, south of Pont du Gard and Avignon and north of Montpellier and Marseille. It was a nice, quiet town and close to many of the places we wanted to visit. In this photo, Hans is standing in front of the Saint-Gilles Town Hall.
Porte d'Auguste
by leics
The Porte d'Auguste, where the Via Domitia entered the colonia, is one of the two Roman town 'gates' still standing. It dates from around 27BC.
Although you can't go inside, it is still pretty impressive. There is a central entrance for carts, with pedestrian entrances either side. Originally it had two defensive towers as well.
If you look at the interior wall of the right-hand passage you will see a row of typical Roman square holes, used for scaffolding and/or flooring supports.
There is a replica statue of Emperor Augustus within the site.

Ancient Amphitheatre for Gladiator Combat
by Fastfreddie
Long before the National Football League, the real games were performed at the Roman amphitheatre in this city. One of the best preserved in all of Europe, this building was built in the first century AD and is used for public events (like.bull fighting ) even today!
