Transport from Nimes to Aix en Provence

by PFR

I am flying in from Liverpool and need to get to Aix en Provence. Is there a train, coach or bus from Nimes airport, or Nimes itself, to Aix en Provence? I tried looking on the rail web sites but got nowhere (excuse the pun)
Perhaps someone can advise which site to book or whether booking is necessary.

There are several available trains. http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage?_DLG=SvHomePage&_CMD=cmdHomepageUK&WB=HP

You travel via Marseilles. Times varied from 1 hr 12 min to the Aix TGV station on up to 3+ hours at different times. You should be able to book on the web site above (which is in English). You can probably get your ticket there rather than book ahead.

There is undoubtedly bus service too. Google the airport and they will give you transportation options and web links.

Most French bus services are fairly local, and people use the train for longer distances.

TGV Nimes to Aix (TGV station) is about 1hr 15mins
Ordinary train Nimes to Aix (central station) is about 3hrs (via Marseille)

I don't know of a direct bus service, but http://www.stdgard.com goes Nimes-Avignon ....... and http://www.infociao.com/gares_routieres.php?commune=aix_en_provence goes Avignon-Aix.

Travel Tips for Nîmes

What a load of boules

by sourbugger

The town has good facilities for this most french of french pastimes.

I found intense games going on around the entrance to Jardins De la Fontaine and towards the southern end of the Boulevard Jean Jaures near the Pyramid (which is actually a memorial to the war dead including the victims of concentration camps)

Temple de Diane

by leics

The Temple of Diana is in the Jardins de la Fontaine, on the left-hand side.

There is no real evidence that this Roman monument was actually dedicated to Diana:it is more likely that it was part of the sanctuary area dedicated to Nemausus, the spring which gave Nimes its name.

Although much restored in parts, it is nevertheless an interesting and impressive site. You can still see the remains of the barrel-vauled roof, the niches for statues and even some of the roof decoration (some in situ, some displayed elsewhere). Make sure you look up under the remaining barrel-vaulting to see the rather lovely carvings (avoid the pigeons and their droppings!).

A 'must-see' if you are visiting the gardens (which themselves are a 'must-see' if you are visiting Nimes).

pont du gard

roman aqueduct, 20km north of nimes route avignon, is one of the most famous aqueducts of the augustus era. worth a visit but can be quite hard to get to , i would hire a car or ask at the tourist office (address below) beautiful views, its amazing when you think 'i am actually standing on this thing the romans built!'

Roman Nimes

by roamer61

This city, which some place in provence, and others in Languedoc-Roussillon, is important due to its wealth of Roman remains. In fact, it is called the French Rome. One can see temples, an amphitheater and other vestiges from Roman Times. There are other attractions as well in this city, besides the Roman ones. It can be quite warm here in season. So dress appropiately.
