February 2009 in Nimes
by estmoyma
Hi!
My name is Esteban. I from Costa Rica. In February I will be in Nimes, and I would like to know all about Nimes, so I would greatly appreciate that help me with different locations to visit, and activities that I can do in Nimes, and also about the night partys. By the way, I only speak Spanish and a little bit English.
Thanks

Nimes has wonderful examples of Roman architecture that make it a worthwhile destination. Perhaps the best place to find specific information is here:

http://www.pontdugard.fr/
In spite of this region's proximity to Spain, I have heard more Spanish spoken in Tokyo than I have heard in the south of France.

You should also look at the VT Nimes pages (I have one), which will give you a lot of information and tips. Use the searchbox top right of this page to find them.
Nies is a pleasant enough place with, as mentioned, some excellent Roman remains. You will, I think, have to learn to speak French whilst you are there although most people speak at least a little English.
You can easily take the train from Nimes to visit other towns, such as Avignon. www.sncf.com will give you times and fares.
Travel Tips for Nîmes
Agrippa and Augustus...
by AlfredSt
Agrippa and Augustus (Octavian) were the best mates. Agrippa took Augustus' daughter Julia as his wife after divorcing a niece of Augustus. One of Agrippa's five children by Julia, Agrippina the Elder, was the mother of one emperor (Caligula) and the grandmother of another (Nero).
The crocodile chained to a palm is the symbol of Nîmes.
le point du gard
by TheFish
it's a bridge built by the romans... and it's still standing. that seems rather amazing to me. there were people everywhere but it didn't really disturb me. alot of people were swimming in the river. i like this picture i got of david. it's cool.
i can't really tell you why to go see le point du gard. it's just a nice pretty spot. quiet. i liked it. i don't know how to tell you if you would.
pont du gard. take a bus out...
by dinasmurf
pont du gard. take a bus out there for day and go swimming. keep in mind the old legend: the bridge was constructed by the devil and would claim the soul of the first person to walk across.
built by the romans without any mortar and is still in perfect condition. the gard river is ice blue and very refreshing in the sun.

"roman nimes"
Nimes was great to get from the airport it cost 5 euros and took 20 minutes. Stayed in the center near the coloseum.
Bought a ticket for the coloseum, temple and watch tower for 27 euros for 3 off us.
great value.
Just hope your fit to get up to the watch tower and then climb the steps
Roman town of Nimes

"The roman roots.."
Nimes still has intact a few wonderful monuments, dating from the Roman period of the town, about 2,000 years ago.
Les Arenes... (the Arena) is a roman amphitheatre... or the kind of public place where games (sometimes bloody ones) took place.
And that's why the town of Nimes is twinned with my town, Verona... that has an Arena as well. It's not in my intention to argue here about wich one is better! ;-)
