I had a week there in October....it's only 2 euro return on the bus from the station, so it's worth a look..but dont plan on getting excited ! I think down the Vermillion Coast is a better bet, and it's not all that far from Perpignan.

Perpignan is a decent sized town and will be operating as normal in early December but you will find all the coastal towns will be basically shut down for the season. The exception may be towards the southern end of the coast, particularly Colliore - many bars/restaurants will still be closed but it is a pretty town and is a port rather than a beach so there could still be some activity. A better bet might be to rent a car and head inland where there is quite a bit to see - 'cathar' chateaux, abbeys, the little yellow train, mountain walks etc. Have you got your accommodation lined up?

Hi,

I´ve been to Perpignan in 2002, the city itself is not so attractive in my opinion but it is perfect for daytrips to the Pyrenees. I would definetely recommend the Cathar Castles (Peyrepertuse, Montsegur, etc.), you could do daytrips to Albi, Carcassone or Cordes-Sur-Ciel. Check my Languedoc pages, if you like.
Best regards Michael

Travel Tips for Perpignan

Catalan

by dlandt

Although I'm not sure where the borders of Catalonian culture and language end, it seems that Perpignan has something of the Catalan tradition. Frequently, you see the Catalan flag, and many shops offer Catalan specialties. Even though you are under the tricolor, there are many tapas bars.

Catalan culture seems to be presented slightly differently here than on the Spanish side of the border. There is something a bit "arranged" or maybe forced. It doesn't have aquite the same natural feel to it. Only on a few occasions did I overhear conversations in Catalan. Most people preferred to talk in French.

I tended to the opinion that Catalan culture was something of a marketable tourist draw. Definitely, there is native Catalan culture here, but in my brief glimpse I tended to think it's something they play up.

The Upper Chapel Has Decorations

by hquittner

A few decorations are in the Upper Chapel that make it more interesting. There is an old wooden altar with small paintings and Ivory inlays as well as small carvings on the Gothic lower vault and at the center. Elsewhere unrestored sculptures await display that have never been set out.

"Palace of the Kings of Majorca"

Perpignan le Palais des Rois de Majorque.
situated :
rue des Archers
Perpignan
Phone: 33 4 68 34 48 29
Enclosed within the Spanish citadel located at the top of the town, this 13th-century fortified palace is built around a central courtyard with the Salle de Majorque, a great hall with Gothic arched windows, flanking one side. A lovely view of the Pyrenees can be enjoyed from the tower.
