This fortification is situated on the Seille River, in the Eastern part of the city. In Previous times here was a castle that was built in XIII-XV centuries but nowadays we can see only remains. Though, I must say, even remains are impressive.
This is the bridge that connects the island where the temple Neuf and Opera Theatre are, to the part of the city where St. Vincent Abbey and Temple de Garnison are. it's all very near. But this bridge is lovely since it's very lively and nicely decorated, and it offers a wonderful view on Moselle and the cityscape behind.
It was May 1 when labor union members in Metz walked through the main streets. Red flags and smoke crackers added excitement to the May day peaceful march.
"But I have to be here on May 1". Why not, its a good month and a day to visit this beautiful city!
Metz was once the most heavily fortified city in western Europe. Its extensive network of walls surrounded it, making it capable of withstanding a protracted siege. Today, little remains of the walls, which (like most medieval walls) were mostly pulled down to make way for urban development. Many streets in Europe follow the routes of the old city walls. But a sizable portion of the old walls still remain. Strolling around these walls gives on a "feel" for what the city was like once.
The most outstanding feature that survives today is the Porte des Allemands, or German Gate. It stand on the northeast side of the old city, facing Germany. Here is an excellent example of medieval military architecture. Touring the walls also affords the visitor a chance to get a little exercise; it's a pretty good hike.

Q: Advice about getting to Metz "My daughter will be studying at the Georgia Tech campus near Metz this summer. I am trying to decide the best place for her to fly..."
A: "I think the LGV Est will go into operation in June 2007, a bit too late for your daughter - I'm afraid she would have to travel by "normal" train, not a high speed one...."
