Travel Tips for Nancy

History I

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The city is known from the X-th century. From the XIII-XVIII century Nancy was a residence of dukes of Lorraine.

In 1477 near Nancy hired Swiss infantry and elzasian and lotharingian armies of duke Lotharingian crushed knights of the Burundian duke Charles the Bold who was lost in fight. His death and defeat of armies led to disintegration of the Burundian duchy.

The market square and general trading centre in the Middle Ages, the fountain in the middle has a statue of Duke René II of Lorraine, who defeated Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, at the Battle of Nancy in 1477.

Painters

by solopes

We know that Nancy is a landmark in arts, but we were not expecting to see painters around, as seen in Paris. It happened in the garden called "La Pepiniere".

A very old man (more than one hundred years) approached us , identifying himself as Claude Oscar Monet (never heard!), and asking permission to paint us.

We had no much time, and posing under the rain was not the best idea, so we turned our back and tried to move away.

He insisted and in a couple of strokes painted something.

Na! I think that Monet has no future!

Stanislas Door

by solopes

Confusing, is what I can say.

Looking Roman, in the decoration, I cannot connect this door from the 18th century to Stanislas. My fault, of course!

In the way to/from the train station, evidencing the signs of the intense traffic that crosses it, it doesn´t make justice to what expects you at the end of the street.

Notre Dame

by Lalique

This is Notre Dame (haven't been inside), the little square (not the one on the pic ;))) in front of it is very nice and cosy.
Behind my back, so the opposite side of the image :))) is the entrace to the Park.

The Porte de la Citadelle

by hquittner

There is a more northern gate just a little further north than the Porte de la Craffe called the Porte de la Citadelle built in 1598 which also has a single lane of traffic under it . It is topped by a statue and some fine bas-reliefs done by Florent Drouin
