Travel Tips for Nancy

History V

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Stanislav died in Nancy in 1766. Some habitants considered that he got drunk of wine from plum (traditional in these territories), stumbled and fallen in a fireplace from which he could not get out. There was only a servant who of the lowest caste, who had not the right to touch the king. While he ran for a help, the king burned down. After his death Lorraine was attached to the French crown.

Only after Stanislav death slow, but true plunder of works of art and furniture from ducal palaces, destruction the Lorain style began. Versailles should not have competitors! Private attempt to give Nancy the status of typically country town began. For some time attempt went right, but today nevertheless it is possible to consider it is not included.

Parc de la Pepiniere

by bugulma

In 1765 Stanislas founded royal pepiniere (nursery garden) along fortifications of the town. It was made up of 16 plots of cultivated ground, with trees intended to be planted along the roadsides in Lorraine. In 1835 park became public, it is open from 6.30 am to 8 pm in winter and from 6.30 am to 10-11.30 pm in summer. The park is not far from Stanislas Square.

Basilica Saint Epvre

by tini58de

This basilica looks really old, but it was only built in the second half of the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. At the moment (2007) much of the facade is under scaffolding. The parts that can be seen, though, are pretty impressive. The interior is huge, so do try to visit this church!

Eglise Saint-Francois-des-Cordeliers

by hquittner

Just north of the Ducal Palace is the royal church of the Cordeliers which was built in the latter part of the 15C. The outside is plain but the length is over 70 meters. There are large lateral windows and at the west end is a restrained stained window. In the west part of the nave are some gisants done by famous sculptors of important royal individuals. There is an interesting altar, fine choir stalls and other furnishings to examine. There is a chapel beyond the north side of the church that is octogonal in shape with an unusual dome which was created for the members of the family. which is similar to that of the Medicis in Florence with fine black marble coffins and fine decoration of the roofing.
