Travel Tips for Nancy

All that glitters.....

by tini58de

..... is not gold! But on Place Stanislas there is more gold to be seen than I could take!

In 2004 and 2005 the square was restored to look like in the 18th century - and that included all this gold! This restauration cost approximately 9 million euros. The inauguration of the new Place Stanislas in May 2005 was just in time with the square's 250th anniversary. Both sitting in one of the cafés on Place Stanislas during the day to relax, rest my feet and watch people as well as having a glass of champagne in the evening of our wedding anniversary and enjoying the illuminated square!

Stanislas square I

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The most effective square of Nancy, Royal, carries Stanislav's name today. It is almost square, 100 on 125 meters, and has a monument in the middle. All the buildings changed function during centuries. So, in former customs now there is the Museum of fine arts. Not so long ago it have attached a new building, successfully having hidden it in a garden. There is an opera in an inhabited palace.

The hotel of Queen (it is named so in honor of grand daughter Stanislav Maria-Antoinette) is situated in the house of the majordomos. The pose of a monument should not surprise: once it was a monument to Lui, then revolutionary sailors and soldiers (sailors belonged, probably, to the river fleet: in Lorraine Moselle originates) dumped a monument from a pedestal in due time.

The Old North Gate of Nancy

by hquittner

The Porte de la Craffe was built in the 14C at the north end of the city and was was extended in the 16C. On the outside of the inner wall is a Cross of Lorraine and above it are a line of machicolations, while laterally there are two thick towers which served as prisons. In the center a lantern adornment was added in the 18C. A Renaissance style entry was created on the northern entry which today has a driveway through the center. There is a small museum in the towers.

THE MONTET BOTANICAL GARDENS....

by eden_teuling

This precious place is an authentic living MUSEUM of plants, which graces the outskirts of the Nancy Urban area.

Created in 1975, the gardens and the conservatory have a dual scientific and cultural mission.
They are jointly maganged by the Universit? Henri Poincar?1, and the urban community of Greater Nancy.

Extending over 27 hectares, the garden grows over 12.000 plants from every CONTINENT, giving visitors an idea ot the extraordinary resources of the plant world, so OFTEN UNDERESTIMATED imho!

A variety of collections allow visitors to familiarise themselves not only with the plants they find in their own garden, but also with species native to far-off countries!

It is a JOY to lose yourself in 2.500 m2 of greenhouses with their giant waterlilies, orchids, banana-, coffee- and citrus trees, cacti etc...

A visit to these wonderful gardens will soon turn into an exploration of its many wonders..

This is really worthy of a visit.....you'll enjoy it greatly!
