Close to the train station two high towers call our attention.
They belong to the Neo-gothic church of Saint-Leon, built in the 19th century and dedicated to the bishop of Toul, who became Pope Leon IX.

To the north of the Arch of Triumph is the long rectangular square of Carriere which used to be the parade grounds. In its 18C later transformation it has been surrounded by fine private mansions. At each end are more of the famous grilles of Lamour and along the sides are statues of nymphs and at the corners are fountains and lanterns.

The rectangular square, which was formerly known as PLACE ROYALE, is regularly the theatre for traditional, cultural and folklore events.
On summer evenings, its many outdoor cafees provide the ideal vantage point from which to enjoy the sound and light-show celebrating Stanislas.
Situated between the old town (Vieille Ville) built in the 10th Century, and the 16th Century new town (Ville Neuve), the square houses the City Hall (H?tel de Ville), de municipal Opera House and Theatre as well as the Fine Arts Museum (Mus?e des Beaux Arts).
This Museum's prestigious collections take in almost every major period in European Art, from the 14th Century to the present day.
Works by Caravaggio, Rubens, Delacroix, Modigliani, Picasso, Rodin and Majol are displayed alongside those of Local Painters such as Callot, Friant and Prouv?, together with cristal from the DAUM Glassworks.
To reach the Old Town stroll through Place de la Carri?re with it elegant architercture, culminating with the double hemi-cycle of the Palais du Gouverneur (Governor's Palace), designed by the Arcitect Emmanuel H?r?.
The Medieval Town with its narrow streets and numerous townhouses, former residences of gentry and local notables, offers the ideal setting for a leisurely stroll.

La Pepiniere Park

My first visit was in winter, and I skipped it.
This time it was summer, and I went there: raining!
A quick visit, and a promise: next time, under the sun, I'll appreciate the details.
