From the middle of the 19th century, Lourdes has been one of the most famous Marian sanctuaries in the world. Three churches have been built above the cave where the Virgin Mary appeared, they are the Crypt, the Basilica of the Rosary, and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. To the west of the cave are the pools for the infirm, to the east the springs of miraculous water. The underground Basilica of Saint Pius X can hold thirty thousand people and the Way of the Cross is built on the mountain.
