Travel Tips for Rocamadour

Study the 12C Frescos on the Side of St. Michael's

by hquittner

The two colorful 12C frescos and the fragment below are worthy examples of very early large religious paintings before Giotto. They appear to derives from Byzantine models on reliquaries or illuminations. The picture on the left has a gracious Mary receiving the Annunciation and on the right her meeting with Elizabeth. Below it is a sketch, lightly colored of the same period and probably another part of an unknown subject. Note also the framing cornices of the upper fresco which display fine modillion heads. These frescos were originally on the wall of the Chapel of Our Lady in the 12C . The adjacent chamber was destroyed by rock fall or plunderers or both. The reduced chapel was rebuilt smaller to the right.

A Rocky Plateau Village

"Spectacular Natural"

When I saw this village from far away.... Spectacular and speechless.
Rocamadour is situated atop a rocky plateau overlooking the Alzou Valley. The town is really a magnificent site, with houses and castle built onto the side of the vertical cliffs.

When We arrived, we didn't take elevator, but walking up and sometimes by stairs, even need hard work to walk up, but it's worthed with the view.

Rocamadour, about 100 miles north of Toulouse, is a popular destination for pilgrims for hundreds years, this is b'cos the powers of the Black Madonna housed in the Chapelle Notre Dame in the heart of the cité (old city). From 12th to 14th centuries, the town become an importand stop on the main pilgimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
