Michelin Star Meal

by sue_stone about Restaurant La Matelote

The main reason we went to Boulogne was to have dinner in a Michelin starred restaurant, La Matelote.

Located across the road from the beach attached to Hotel La Matelote, this was quite an experience - old fashioned service in a beautifully decorated room (not to my taste, but nicely done).

Although posh, the restaurant still allows small dogs….there was one at (or should I say under) the table next to us. While we were perusing the menu they bought over some complimentary appetisers. We ordered main meals and desserts (had to order dessert up front). They then bought out complimentary entrees with 4 mini things to try each - yum!

Main meals arrived - fish - really great. Then we received complimentary
pre-dessert treats....there was a freshly baked madeleine with cream, and also
a 2 tiered platter of mini cakes! Then to top it off they bought out some
fairy(candy) floss!!

And this was all before our dessert....which of course by this stage we didn't need...but had to eat....(the sacrifices we make!!) I had a Lemon Soufflé and Alex had an amazing Choc/Hazelnut cake/biscuit thing.

Needless to say it was a slow waddle back to the hotel!

Where to eat?

by DaveDeakin

Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais area of France, preferably in the country, village or small town rather than the larger towns such as Calais, Dunkerque or Boulogne-Sur-Mer.

Hi David,
To me, if someone recommend a good restaurant to somebody else it has to be very, very good. So here is my favourite.

To me it's the second to none.

Travel Tips for Boulogne-sur-Mer

Etaples Military Cemetery

by sue_stone

Located around 27kms south of Boulogne in Etaples, on the road to Le Touquet, is the Etaples Military Cemetery.

The cemetery contains over 10,000 burials from the First World War and just a few from the Second World War.

Located right by the roadside, it is a sobering site when you come across it. We pulled over to have a closer look. We just looked over the fence, but you can go into the cemetery if you wish.

Basilique Notre Dame

by sue_stone

The Notre Dame Cathedral can’t be missed when in Boulogne….mainly because it is so big you can’t help but see it!!

Built between 1827 – 1866, it sits above the town, in the Ville Haute and has one of the largest domes in Europe.

There is no entry charge, so therefore no excuse not to go inside and admire this cathedral and its fabulous dome.

We were pretty impressed actually, and it was nice to have the place virtually to ourselves, besides the guy playing the organ, which just added to the peaceful atmosphere.

Boulogne Old Town

by grets

Boulogne's Old Town was built in the 13th century within the original Roman walls. A few years ago this area was quiet and dull, since the recent restoration the area has been regenerated and is now a lively place with many bars, restaurants and shops.

You can walk all around the ramparts, and a castle was built on one corner of the walls to strengthen the fortifications. The castle houses a museum - I haven't been there yet, but have been told it is very interesting.

From the Middle Ages to the Revolution

by Mikebond

These photos tell more of the history of the church from the 12th to the 19th century.
The first picture shows some vestiges from the 12th or 13th century, i.e. shortly after Countess Ide de Boulogne had the first church built.
Boulogne underwent a heavy English siege in 1544 which damaged the church: the cannon balls in the second photo remind us of that sad event.
As the cult of Notre-Dame de Boulogne spread throughout France and abroad, French Kings and Dukes started going on pilgrimage to Boulogne and to make gifts to the church: here you see the choir marbles donated by the Sun King Louis XIV in 1653 and a beautiful alabaster bas-relief donated by the Duke of Aumont in 1666.
The French Revolution didn't forget Boulogne-sur-Mer, unfortunately: the church was destroyed. Here you see a christening font from 1803, shortly after the end of the Terror, when the revolutionary calendar was still in use: the original date was 19th Germinal, year 11.
