My g.g.grandfather Nathaniel Powell & his brother Thomas were lace makers from England living in Calais in the 1840s. Most of their children were born there before they came to the US arounf 1850 and settled in CONN & Philadelphia. Two of the sons(my g.grandfather) started a stocking mill in Philadelphia in 1879 and became quite successful. We want to see the lace museum and the area of St. Pierre where they lived. We are wondering where the best archives are--perhaps city hall? Could we find a history buff to hire for a tour. We will only come down from London on the train for the day--9:30am-9:30pm. perhaps on Sept 9th.

Why not contact the Office de Tourisme for Calais? They will certainly be able to help you with regard to archives (you may need to make an appointment to access these anyway) and may be able to suggest a local historian whom you could contact.

The diocese will have archives only for catholics (baptized). The "Etat Civil" will have archives for everybody, catholic or not. They are kept at the city archives :

The French always use s'il vous plait and merci beaucoup. Just out of common curtousy. Oh and be careful how you address people, make sure you know the difference between tu and vous. Of course a lot of people will understand English and quite often will prefer to speak English, just to use and expand their vocabulary. But if you want to blend in, it always helps to read up on the common phrases, don't worry I'm rubbish at grammar aswell.
You can easily identify the brits when you arrive in Calais. They are the ones who are racing to the shopping centres to get their cut price alcohol and then racing back to the UK!
I'm honestly not sure what else there is to do in Calais as the main attraction seems to be the shopping centres.
