History of Calais
by grayfo
Calais came about because of its geographical position. Flints in primeval tombs found on the heights of the Calais show that this part of the continent was lived in since prehistoric times. The origin of the name Calais is obscure, the popular version is that Calais is called "Caletum" on a former map, and that the Calèteses came to help the Morins to oppose the Roman invasion, they established themselves here and founded a colony to which they gave their name. Over a number of years this changed to become Calais.
The genius of Auguste Rodin

The figures are of intense emotion, insecurity, fear and bravery all at the same time.
Rodin had meant this group of statues to be placed on the market square of Calais, so that people could walk between them. Placing them all at the same level as living people he wanted to express equality and humility. But the town council decided it should be on the traditional socket.
Calais...beyond the booze cruize.

Ok, so I've never had a particularly good impression of Calais. The first impressions I had of it were arriving at the port having crossed the channel on the ferry (or the hovercraft...remember those?) It wasn't until a few years later that I actually visited the town. I'ts really quite pretty.
