Sometimes, one has to buy ordinary things or food. Auchan is a good place to do so. There is one in Englos, but you need a car unless you are patient and wait for the slow and infrequent bus. The V2 Auchan in Villenueve d'Ascq in on the metro line (station Hotel de Ville on the yellow line). There is also a large supermarket on the red line across the street from the St. Philibert Hospital (station St. Philibert on the red line).
From London, the Eurostar from Waterloo Station. Fares start at £79 return or even sometimes as low as £40 return during promotional periods.
I walked and walked and walked. The city center is within walking distance of the Eurostar station.
French beef can be tough for some reason. Perhaps it's because the cows may not be corn fed (or is this reason wrong?). Someone had a very tough steak that slipped off the plate when they tried to cut it! Should I name the restaurant?
We found Lille to be short on major things to occupy ouselves but good just for wandering and enjoying the sights. There's plenty of shopping and architecture to admire as well as several enticing refreshment stops.

The P'tit Quinquin is a statue to a lullaby.
It was erected in memory of a town-hall clerk, who back in 1852 composed a lullaby that was adopted by every mother in Lille, and used to soothe their children at bed time.
The statue shows a poor lacemaker whose child would not stop crying, and is said to "melt the hardest of hearts"
It is situated in the pretty Square Foch, which is a relaxing place to stop for a while and rest your feet.
