Arriving in Lille in midnight - what transport?
by j3r0nim
Hi! I will be an Erasmus student in Lille and I'm arranging my travel from Brussels to Lille.
Because of a late flight to Brussels(arriving at 19;30), I estimated that I can reach Lille around midnight on Sunday with Eurolines bus. I am wondering where do these buses usually stop in Lille and if there is a public transport in this hour? If not, do you know how much a taxi will cost from the bus station to the hall of residence of USTL?
My other variant is to take a really early flight to Charleroi(arr. 8:10) and then probably a train or bus. I will be grateful if someone can suggest me the cheapest/fastest variant from Charleroi to Lille.
Thank you in advance!

To answer the second question first, there is a direct train once every hour between Charleroi (Sud) station and Lille (Flandres) station, taking about 1hr 30 minutes for the journey. All you have to figure out is how to get from Charleroi airport to the Sud Station. That seems very straightforward.
(Lille Flandres station is next to the larger and newer Lille Europe station and both are on the Metro.)
The last train from Brussels airport to Lille is at 1950, so that's not an option for plan A.
The Eurolines website gives the Lille address/stopping point as Lille : Boulevard de Leeds - arrêt autocar / métro «Lille Europe», le long de la gare TGV Lille Europe
http://www.eurolines.fr/destinations/departs---destinations/france---points-darrets/
According to Google Maps the location of the USTL is close to the Metro station 'CITE SCIENTIFIQUE' on Line 1. The public transport site for Lille is www.transpole.fr and a quick look tells me that the metro operates through the city centre out to the suburbs until about 0030/0045 every day. A few of the bus routes also run until about 0030/0045.
I have used the trams and metro in Lille which are both very efficient.
I hope that helps.

Arriving in Charleroi in the morning might be the better option.
From Charleroi Airport, there is a public bus just outside the airport that will take you to Charleroi Sud Train Station. Bus fare is €2.50. From there, you can take the train to Lille Flandres. It will take an hour and a half to get there. Full fare is €20.80.
I hope this helps.

Firstly, I want to thank to all of you about the fast replies! Probably, this is dangerous, because I will keep in mind for the next time I'm in a hard decisive situation :)
As far as I see, I should take the advice about the early morning arrival. The only thing that I didn't get is about the Charleroi Sud station - the site of the belgian railways shows me that there are ~15(?) different variants of the 'Charleroi Sud'. Probably these are the different tracks on the station?
Also, can and should I book my ticket for the train before my arrival in Charleroi?

Musée des Beaux Arts
by tijs
On the Place de la République you will find the hugue museum of beautiful art, which is the 2nd museum of France after the Louvre With 22.000 m2 of space. The building is not just interesting because of the art that is inside, but also because of the architecture. During the recent renovation they have put an extra building towards the old part, that is made from glass and is reflecting the old building. You can find paintings from the flamish school and dutch paintings of the XVth and XVIIth century, Spanish and French paintings, Venitian paintings from the XVIth to the XXth century; a collection of sculptures and some german art as well. They even have old maps and reliefs of North-European cities.
Location: Palais des Beaux Arts, Place de la Rèpublique - 59000 LILLE
Directions: In Lille city centre. Take Lille's convenient metro to 'République' or walk through the pedestrian shopping streets from Lille Flandres station. Information: Tel: 0320067800 Check out the mirror ball hanging in the main hall.

Great Vietnamese restaurant full of character
by Iteris about Meet People Restaurant
There are a number of enticing looking restaurants along the Rue de Grand but the Vietnamese influence on the menu here looked fantastic. The interior is full of character, with contemporary furniture alongside exposed brickwork and subtle lighting. There are tables upstairs accessible via a steep metal spiral staircase. The menu is in French and being English and not having spoken/read French for years i gambled on a starter which turned out to be parcels of diced meat and veg with a sauce. Very nice. The main course was amazing, chicken in a Cajun sauce with cashew nuts, noodles and rice. It was full of flavour and not too filling.
Wazemmes
by rfi02
The former working class neighborhood is turning into the home of students, artist and immigrants, which gives the area a wonderfully creative flair, though there are a lot of disadvantages for the locals like rising prices for flats and houses. Don't miss the market every Sunday morning on the main square (Metro Wazemmes). You can walk through half of the world within half an hour, Sunday afternoon, locals go drinking, singing and dancing in the pub CIGALE just on the market sqare. pic.: If you buy one of the papers, produced and sold by homeless people, you will give them a great help. It makes feel better selling one's own product instead of begging or queing for help from the city
New Opera House
by Helga67
Next to the New Stock Exchange stands another impressive building. It's the New Opera House. It was also built in 1906 in Louis XVI-style.
On the right side of the entrance you can find this statue. It represents tragedy. On the left side is the statue representing music.
