Flanders Poppies
by Thylacene
Will be in Lille April 14 and wish to put some flanders poppies on Grandfathers WW1 grave.
Will Flanders poppies be blooming then & can I pick them in the area?
If not where in Lille can I get some to put on hid grave?
cheers from Australia

I think it will be a little early but don't know for certain. You know, I think if you contact the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and try and contact the section that deals with the cemetary you are after, then they will probably be able to help. Or else contact the Town Hall of the place nearest to the cemetary. As to whether you will be able to pick them, I have seen them growing all over the verges and fields so unless there is a specific protection order on them, then I should imagine you would be able to gather a bouquet.
Travel Tips for Lille
Beer
by barryg23
France is known more for its excellent wines than its beers and in most French towns I'd be trying the wines but Lille is an exception. Thanks to its location close the Belgian border, there are some excellent beers available in the bars and restaurants of Lille. Almost every pub in the city had a good selection but a good place to get a taste of the different types of beers is Les Trois Brasseurs on Place de la Gare. The beer is well priced here and they offer a Palette de Degustation which lets you sample 4 types of beer: blonde, brun, blanche and ambre.
Travel within Lille is also...
by Bixente
Travel within Lille is also made easy, as there are a number of ways of getting around. The most popular method is the Metro. There are two metro lines in Lille linking many of the quartiers. The metro is also reasonably priced with a single journey costing 1,15 euros and a day ticket 3,35 euros.
The metro runs from 5.30 in the morning (6.30 on Sunday) until 12.30 at night.
Other travel options around Lille are by tram and bus and the tickets for these are the same as the Metro.
Don't miss tea time at Méert
by Helga67 about Méert
This is the oldest and most beautiful pastry shop of Lille. Since 1761, Méert is the supplier of royalty and important people all over the world. Their speciality is waffles filled with Madagascar vanilla.
They have a very beautiful shop near the Grand Place where they sell delicious sweets. In the back of the shop, there is a little tea room where you can enjoy one of their famous pies or chocolate cakes. The tea room is very nice decorated with mirrors, chandeliers and gold decoration. It reminded me a little bit of Florian in Venice.
They also have a large list of delicious tea. Lemon pie with green tea with mint
The Original Paul Brasserie
by Getcarlos
Okay so i have a weak spot for a Paul Brasserie Pan au Chocolat, you have seen them in train stations and shopping Centers in France, Barcelona, London even Dubai Airport but why not get yourself a treat from where it all Started in Lille.
The Bakery itself has a huge selection of cakes and savoury treats, baguettes filled with traditional french fillings and you can even get a good coffee there too! The shop has kept its original character and has a couple of tables inside, but be warned its a popular place and can get busy very quickly at lunch time.
The cathedral

Cathedral Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille
The construction dates back to 1854. It is situated exactly to the location of the former castle, city heart. This was not without problems: the works were stopped more then one time: money lacked. The achievement dates back to 1999.

Sa construction date de 1854. Elle est située exactement à l'emplacement de l'ancien château, coeur de la ville.
Ce ne fut pas sans problèmes: les travaux furent arrêtés plus d'une fois: l'argent manquait.
L'achèvement date de 1999.
