Bus Tour of Lille?
by juleswc
Hi Folks,
I'm taking my mum to Lille on Wednesday and although I've stopped off here a couple of times in recent years I can't remember too much about the place.
I seem to remember last time that there was a bus tour of available, now does this still run? and this time of year? walking tour would be great - but given it's my mum, I figure a bus would be better, age and all that ;-)
Plus, if anyone has any suggestions for a nice restaurant for lunch, that would be cool :-)
Cheers
Jules

Travel Tips for Lille
Lille Zoo
by nhcram
I do not mormally go to zoos while I am away preferring the architecture and museums, but my friend and I visited this lovely little zoo in Lille. It was free to enter and I must admit we enjoyed the peace and tranquility there.
The only bit I did not like was the nocturnal enclosure which did not seem right ot me as the animals were wrongly kept in the dark purely for the tourists.
It is on the edge of the city near the Bois De Boulogne
Eurostar to Lille
by joegardham
Eurostar is 1hr 30mins from St Pancras.
You spend 20-25 minutes in the tunnel.
Easy check in process, no restrictions on what you can take on train.
Passport control is quick, bag scanners like at airport, swipe your ticket and you're away.
Think you're allowed two suitcases per person and usual customs allowances on tobacco and alcohol etc.
No ticket checks on train, no food trolley (there's a buffet car though).
At Lille, station isn't the easiest to navigate. There's a main road (Ave Le Corbusier) which splits the station in two. This road leads to town.
You might also find yourself in the open space underneath this road. follow the direction of the road away form the station and you should end up near town.
Ps: Advance Eurostar tickets were £27.50 pp each way!!
It’s certainly fast
by grayfo about Quick Restaurant
The Quick restaurant chain is Belgium-based and is popular in Europe, it is the French/Belgian answer to the McDonald’s fast food invasion. The first Quick opened its doors in France in 1980, this was around the time when the French minister of Cultural affairs Jack Lang made his stand against the Americanisation of French culture. Quick offers low-priced hamburgers, French fries and other standard fast-food fare.

Pure Flemish architecture

La Vieille Bourse
Without protests the monument the most known city, to leaves maybe the belfry.
Constructs by the architect J. Destrée in 1652 for the city merchants (envies Flemish cities Ypres Ghent, Antwerp or Amsterdam?) One did here of the trade up to 1920.
In 1989 one starts a restoration that will last not less than 8 years.
The square is formed by 24 houses to the richly decorated facades of mythological and other motives in relief.
The course surround by arcades to the exuberant decoration, the marble plates to the walls represent a homage to the inventors, scholars, ... Some symbols recall what occupied them. Fascinating!

Fascinant !
