To Lille or not to Lille?

by venice13

If you had 4.5 days in Belgium and 8 days in Paris, with 1 day to spend where ever you wanted. Would you A. Spend it in Lille, B. Add it to Paris or C. Add it to Belgium (we are going to Brussels, Brugge, and Ghent)???

What is Lille like? I read about it in Fodors, but it doesn't say too much except its a small town and there is a big mall type thing to shop in. Is this town worth stopping in?

Personally I would add a day to Belgium as the those cities you mentioned are absolutely spectacular. However, as you have to travel to Paris somehow and would probably drive past Lille you could really visit this city. It is much more interesting than you might think. Especially if you are interested in history it is well worth a visit. They also have beautiful buildings and great museums, so something for everyone.

Either Paris or Belgium - Lille is a place for a couple of hours or so - probably made famous by the nearby factory outlets.

Spend your extra day in Lille, the Old Town (vieille ville) is exceptional. Brilliant city. Its Palais des Beaux Arts is exceptional (one of France's leading museums) and the city centre is very attractive and very lively.

Paris, Ghent and Bruges are all lovely and of course very popular with tourists. Bruges suffers the worst for this because of its relatively small size but Lille is very well worth a visit. In fact if you put Paris aside as something you can't really compare the others with, then I'd say Lille is probably my favourite. It is a real 'living' city, the largest in Northern France and has the shops (both malls and classy boutiques in the old town), restaurants, etc you'd expect but it also has an excellent fine art museum, opera house and the wonderful Citadelle - park with small zoo (free).

How to spend a day in Lille? Have a wander round the Citadelle in the morning (watch out for herons in the moat), then walk into town for lunch, spend a hour or two in the Musee Beaux Arts, then head to the old town for some shopping and tea at Meerts (the best hot chocolate ever). In the evening dine out in one of the many restaurants!

Well worth a visit. I have just booked a return trip even though I am not usually someone who goes back anywhere (too many places to see; too little time!). Enjoy! Sam from England

Since we're planning our first trip to Lille INSTEAD of Brussels, I'd go for Lille.

Travel Tips for Lille

La braderie lilloise

by Oana_bic

Leave your first weekend of September free... that's when Lille holds its famous Braderie, a huge outdoor trade fair that draws one million people from all over Europe. After all, music goes beautifully with fairs and good food : waterzoï, potjevlesh, and tarte aux maroilles (a succulent cheese pie) are just a few great stuff from the typical cuisine..
The best stuff are though the beer & les moules frites..yammi

The best way to get to Lille...

by Skylink

The best way to get to Lille is probably by train. The Eurostar from Waterloo International in London and from Gare du Nord in Paris come to Lille. The old train station is close to the Eurolille station. Trains serve both stations. Lesquin Airport (obviously in Lesquin) is close to Lille but poorly served. Before the advent of the Channel Tunnel, there were flights to LHR, but no more. A flight to Algeria, some to Nice, and a few far away French cities and that's it.
Parking in Lille is not too difficult. It's a bit hard to find in the city center, but not impossible.

Moules & Frites!

by sue_stone about Aux Moules

On our weekend to Lille, we arrived on Friday night, right at dinner time, and really wanted to relax and soak up the feel of the city.

It was a balmy evening, so alfresco dining was a must, and we came across a really busy restaurant - Aux Moules.

They managed to squeeze us in, at one of the outdoor tables, and with a Leffe beer in hand, we sat back and enjoyed. We ate - of course - moules & frites!

A huge casserole pot full of delicious mussels and tasty chips. And what better to wash it all down with but a pint or two of beer.

Spend time in the Grand Place

by ranger49

You will not often see the Grand Place as empty as it was here on a Sunday morning. On other days it is the place where people meet and mingle; just walk across to get around this compact old city; enjoy the space and the architecture; take coffee, a beer or a full meal.

Lille Zoo

by barryg23

I'm not normally a fan of zoos and hadn’t been in one for many years until our visit to the zoo in Lille. It was Sunday afternoon, we had seen most of the sights in Lille and we were wandering in the Bois de Boulougne when we came across Lille's zoo. As there was no entrance charge we decided to go in for a quick look around and ended up staying a couple of hours. I almost missed the start of the French open final between Federer and Nadal!

The highlight of the zoo was Monkey Island where a number of very active monkey's kept us onlookers amused. We also saw panthers, zebras and a good number of South American birds - useful for when we go to the Amazon in 2008.
