Angers' street design may be hard to follow without a map.
So, for first-timers without any map, the first place to head is the tourist information office near the old chateau. It's across the street from the chateau at the junction of Place du Président Kennedy & Rue Toussaint. Their number is 02 41 23 50 00.
They will fall over backwards to speak your language of choice and give free stuff to you.
The main part of town, the old town, is bounded by 3 major boulevardes and the river which pretty much form a rectangle around. The hub of the town, Place du Railliement, is smack-dab in the middle of this rectangle.
To get bearings: downhill generally takes you to the river, and the cathedral is a landmark often visible from many places.
Domaine de Bablut

This was one of our excursions during the month I studied there. It is outside of Angers a little ways and the French countryside surrounding it is just beautiful. We were given a guided tour from a French guy who mumbled a lot and was hard to follow and a wine tasting at the end. I remember a few things from the tour that we learned about the wines, mostly things like a cabernet can age up to 20 years and most white wines will only age 5 years or less. Also, we were given a chance to listen to the inside of a barrel of wine as the fermentation process was going on. You could hear a bubbling noise coming from inside the barrel. It was pretty neat. The wine tasting was of course the best part. They are closed on Sundays.
And all the saints ... Cathedrale St. Maurice

The cathedral itself is built in the Angevin Plantagenet Gothic style. The sculptures surrounding the main entrance are unusual in that they show remnants of their original polychrome painting.
.
These carvings are in the Charrtes style and were made between 1170 and 1180 BCE. The top image is of the tympanum. The bottom image is of the apostles and is found to the left of the main doorway.
Jardin du Mail - the urban part
by Mikebond
The jardin du Mail is a very beautiful park right in the centre of Angers. I think it can be ideally divided into two quite different parts: the urban one and the wild one.
This tip shows you the urban part, with park benches, statues, flowerbeds: the intervention of man is evident. If you do like this face of the jardin du Mail, please do not sit down on a bench, have a rest, and go away: you would miss the wild part, which is maybe more beautiful.
Eglise Saint Serge

We were supposed to see this church but after waiting for a while, no one showed up to let us in for the tour. No, but there was some poor French lady locked inside the church asking us to help her get out through the door but none of us could unlock it. So we all left to go tour the St. Maurice Cathedral..I hope she got out. Anyways, I wish I had more info for you here. Go check it out though, the outside of the church looked pretty magnificent.
