Travel Tips for Doué-la-Fontaine

Zoo de Doue

by Caddy

"Set in the most wonderful natural surroundings...."

We visited Zoo de Doue during the summer of 2007 and again in the summer of 2008. As a family who don't really 'do' zoo's (we see enough animals in Wales!) we decided to visit on the recommendation of a friend and were pleasantly surprised.

I think the main reason we enjoyed it so much (so much so that we returned the following year) was because it was all so natural. Nothing seemed forced, it was all very in keeping with the animals natural habitat and, well, it just felt 'right' somehow.

"Enjoy a meal in the restaurant."

When we visited in 2007 the weather was not great and the forecast was for rain, so we didn't bother taking a picnic - instead opted to eat at the restaurant.

Set in a beautiful location overlooking the giraffe enclosure, we enjoyed an excellent meal (with a nice price tag attached mind you...). When the weather is unfavourable, you can eat indoors, which is equally as pleasant.

"Take plenty of water, sunscreen & a hat..."

Especially during the months of July & August because it can get VERY hot...and unlike this little chap/lady, you can't roll in the mud to cool down. Well, I suppose you could....

Doué la fontaine

"Not just a zoo garden..."

I kissed a giraf in dou? , what can i say. I fell in love with the stonemines with Bamboo , the wild and free concept of the zoo...the nice camping place.

almost in the wild?

Doué was already known in prehistoric times , therefor it has also some curiosities.
-moulin de la fourchette- this is a verry rare towermill.
-A karolingisch donjon- It is the ruin of a 10' century house
-La sabliere- is a cave that is used too make artisanal rosewater
-rue des perri?res - cave-houses ath both sides of the street
-Rosarium - 500 different species of roses.
