Hotel De Biencourt: Friendly, family-owned small hotel

We've stayed here a few times and always enjoyed it. It is in a pedestrian zone a block from the famous Chateau Azay-le-Rideau so you can walk to the chateau for your visit. This is particularly nice for the evening Sound and Light Show since parking is at a premium for that.

Parking for the hotel is free public parking nearby. There are several lots and the owners will direct you as to when one of the lots is closed for the outdoor market. We've never had any problem with parking.

There is a refrigerator at the disposal of guests if you want to keep picnic supplies.

The 18th Century building is 59 to 82 euros for a double room with bath.
The Old School House building is 68 to 72 euros for a double with bath.

Part of the hotel is a converted schoolhouse and the two buildings are separated by a charming and very peaceful courtyard. If you want a little splurge, request a courtyard room.

Breakfast is served looking out on the courtyard and is more than adequate. This is also a great hotel for hikers and bicyclists as there is free, locked bicycle parking at the hotel.

We have stayed several times and will definitely return.

Hotel "Le Manoir des Grandes Vignes": Loire Valley and Cher area: Noyers-sur-Cher

An old manior house in a several thousand sqm garden. The athmosphere there is unique, you feel like travelling in the early days of the last century. We had a nice large room with separate bathroom and toilet. It was more a little flat, for which we payed 70 Euros plus 8 Euros p.p. for breakfast.
The room was clean, there is sufficient romm to park the car on the property, which is secured by a gate.
The old lady owning the house serves the dinner the old fashioned way and her son is really a good cook!
The nice big garden also has a pool and facilities to get an outside drink.
Ideally located, to see the castles in the Blois area or to go to Tours and stay out of too touristy areas.

Chateau de Plessis-Anjou: Stay at a Chateau

Over 20 years ago, the vision for pleasant and interesting French accommodations for independent international sightseers was almost uniquely that of M. Benoist, which he creeated at the Plessis. Being a methods-oriented engineer who understood marketing, he figured out and championed legislation to help leverage and preserve ancient preservable patrimonies like the one his wife had inherited, by establishing chateau accommodations. He physically assisted others in similar situations with advice and encouragement. Today there are over 100 such venues all over France linked together by associations that facilitate reservations and information. All are 3-4* accommodations (i.e. upscale, not 1-2* Logis de France type). Some are not chateaux but are other historic buildings. Many serve table d’hote evening dinners if you reserve well in advance (another idea of M. Benoist). A few have attached gourmet restaurants open to non-guests. The table d’hote dinner is another highlight of a chateau stay! It is a pleasant way to “rub elbows” with other travelers, like a set of mini-VT fora. M. Benoist, who was multilingual, was adept at seating his guests so that a compatible speaker was next on one or both sides at the table. We have stayed at the Plessis on several occasions and have come away enriched and with full stomachs. It is now in a second generation of hosts. Of course they will be helpful with advice about things that you will enjoy in their area, attentive to your interests. The cost is not excessive and it may give you memories that will be the best of your travel experiences!

The ambience and the table d'hote dinners as described above. The dinners are served with aperatif and matching wines of the Loire region possibly followed by after dinner cordial. The host has selected a fine meal and has an exemplary kitchen. Unique may indeed be the word. At present the meal is 48 euro p.p. (above the room and breakfast)

Domaine de la Chapelle: Lovely B&B . . . or rent a house!

We spent a delightful three weeks in the gite rural (country cottage) of Domaine de la Chapelle. It is owned by Phillip and Rebecca Sacker, an adventurous and pleasant British couple, who have moved to France and are sharing their domaine with guests. In addition to the two-bedroom gite, there are four Bed & Breakfast rooms that are utterly charming. They have all been decorated by Rebecca with antique quilts and found objects. One B&B room retains the original beams from the barn they have converted into a B&B.

Rebecca serves breakfast with her own jams and preserves and Phillip will be delighted to show you the 15th century chapel that is part of their property. You can arrange to have dinner served and Rebecca is an excellent cook. Enjoy!

I've listed the B&B prices below and the rooms are 60 to 72 euros a night depending on the room you choose. Because VirtualTourist requires a "per person per night" listing, the gite prices are difficult to list. Gites normally charge by the week so plan on 295 to 525 euros per week depending on the season. Do be sure to check the Domaine's web site for up-to-date information and prices.

The location is magic, perched on a hill overlooking vineyards and the lovely river Cher. There are wonderful walks in all directions and you are in the heart of the Loire chateau country. There must be at least a dozen famous chateaus within a half hour drive and quite a few more not-so-famous but equally charming.

The grounds contain benches for relaxing, a childrens' play area, many fruit and nut trees, umbrella tables for outdoor dining and the lovely 15th century chapel. Phillip said they recently had guests who renewed their wedding vows in the chapel on an anniversary. It appeared that it would be a lovely site for a wedding too.

The gite not only has a private yard and patio, it has a complete kitchen including a dishwasher and clothes washing machine. These can be difficult to find in gites. The bathrooms in all the rooms and the gite are completely modern, spotless and sparkling.

B&B Hotel: Inexpensive chain hotels

When our hosts said we were staying at B&B, I thought they meant a bed & breakfast similar to the overpriced hotels we have in America. Not even close. Yes, they had bed and breakfast, but it was very inexpensive. B&B Hotel is more like a Motel 6 type, which was absolutely fine with me. In Touraine, we got a bi-level room which was great 'cause I got a full-sized bed all to myself and my friend Mark got an upstairs room all to himself. It's set up for families

Although a budget hotel, the facilities were clean and the breakfast was very filling. It was all-you-can-eat with zhambon, scrambled eggs, baguettes, croissants, coffee machine, juice machine, nutella, etc. Good stuff. And, if you can get the bi-level, I'd recommend it. It costs 45 Euros a night (compared to just 35 for the single level), but it's worth it.

Gite Panda in Avon Les Roches: An authentic country house

We stayed for a week in this Gite.
(Gite is a little rural house).
It is in Avon Les Roches in the middle of the Touraine Department near Azay Les Rideaux and Chinon.

The hosts are very friendly

It was ok, it had 3 bedrooms a good kitchen.
The only inconvenience was tha fact that it was fairly cold that week and with the big window (left from the door) not having double glazing, our heating bill was huge!
Since we were there during the Christmas holidays, we cooked a lot and the electricity went down regularly due to the fact that we used lots of power while cooking.

The owner transformed the old house himself into a gite with fairly 'modern' equipment.
He did an OK job, but he's not a fully skilled electrician...

Oh yes, the heating is electrical and there is no double glazing, so the electricity bill was steep !

Options with supplement: bed linen (E6/bed) and activitie to book (potter\'s clay).

Domaine La Batiere: Home from Home

Have just returned from a wonderful fortnight in 'La Batiere'.
Marie and Pierre are so welcoming, they make you feel like one of the family.
There are three cottages to rent or you can stay 'B&B' in the main house.
A good central location for touring the Vendee countryside, and particular for the fabulous Puy de Fou. An unmissable experience.

Peace and quiet,
Bread baking (and eating) weekly
Good sized swimming pool
Very tastefully decorated and modern fittings
Pierre makes his own wine and pineau

CHEZ MR ET MME CLERQUIN: CHAMBRES D'HOTES

When we started looking for a place to stay for the night, we saw a "Chambres D'Hotes" sign and followed it to a neat and tidy little place. The owner greeted us as we pulled up into the driveway and showed us a cute little room where we decided to stay for the night. CHEZ MR ET MME CLERQUIN was a great choice as it was close ( 3 km) to the "ville d'Amboise" and in the heart of the Loire Chateaus "au coeur de chateaux de la Loire".

For the price of 220 francs ($55.00 CDN) you got a comfortable place to stay and a lovely breakfast in the morning.

Hôtel du Cygne: Tours Hotel

Nice, clean but nothing special. Except for breakfast served in a very fancy room.
