While you are waiting for specific ideas from other members you'll find lots of tips, info and ideas on where to stay/what to see etc in the Nantes travel guide ad its linked member pages:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/France/Pays_de_la_Loire/Nantes-100955/TravelGuide-Nantes.html
But if you mean you are looking for somewhere for your stepdaughter to stay then her university should provide her with contacts and information.

Some friends of mine live near Nantes. Prices in the shops, catching the bus or tram etc are roughly the same as in the UK (wine cheaper of course) but the cost of going out to bars, clubs, restaurants etc is horrifying. Turns me tee-total when I go there.
What to do? Well do students still do the same as I did all those years ago? But maybe not so often.
The Nantes city transport website is
http://www.tan.fr/
so your stepdaughter can check out everything there. Naturellement, cette information est seulement en français

If it is an exchange programm as you said the university in Nantes has for sure all kind of proposals where she can stay / live.
And if she "may be" comes her University has some experience with other students before her and can also advise for example which of the other students in the past from your city have been in Nantes. So it must be easy for all of you to get all kind of information in your hometown.
About "what to do" you can used Google: http://www.nantes-tourisme.com/
As you know France is an expensive country but local students in Nantes knows where to go out and where to buy food.
Travel Tips for Nantes
Le Stade De La Beaujoire
by mustertal
Beaujoire Stadium had a major refurbishment for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, although it is home to the Nantes Football team.
It seating capacity is 38,285, with 220 seats reserved for the handicapped.
Inside the stadium you will find bars and snack places, toilets for both sex's and souvenir shops.
There is limited parking.
You can take a tour of the Stadium bookable through the Nantes tourist office during the months of July and August.
Tram line 1 from the City goes to La Beaujoire.
Archeology museum

The Museum is called Musée Dobrée.
For those interested in ethnology and archeology, the Musée Dobrée may be a good place to go. Located in the city center, 5 minutes walking from Place Graslin, in an old house with a relaxing park. Have been to an exhibition of greek vases, which was interesting. Nothing to compare with Metropolitan Museum though...
