Set along The Loire, Saumur is dominated by Chateau de Saumur (built under Luis XI from 1246) and is famed for its horses & wine. It's a really very beautiful piece of the world.
The west of Saumur is known as "Troglodyte Valley" and it's here, 6km north of Doue, that you'll find the Village of Rouchemenier.
The east of Saumur is littered with underground wine cellars (cave vins).
For us,as a family, the beauty of Saumur (other than it's obviously amazing setting, architecture, wines etc...) was that whilst it was a relxed place it is crammed with things to do...on everybodies level.
If you are into the 3 C's... (castles, caves & cathedrals) this is the place for you.
