Very good traditional hotel

The Hotel de la Basilique is excellent. It doesn't have a glamorous reception area or 36" plasma TVs on the walls, which nobody sane would worry about. What it offers are the two things a traveller would normally want - a decent, clean, quiet room with a comfortable bed (with a normal sized TV, which I think picks up some UK channels) and good food. In fact the food is very, very good - better than you would expect even in a French hotel. When I was there the restaurant was full of local people.

It's in the middle of town, bang in front of the basilica with the famous golden Madonna on the spire. (Hence the name. Cf. Hotel de la Poste, Hotel de la Gare, etc.)

The people there were very helpful in arranging a taxi (actually a minibus) to drive me round the main Somme sites.

Unique Quality: Outstandingly good food, with a focus on local Picardy specialities

What a Surprising Town

by chrishc

"An overlooked diamond"

Whar a great little town.

Albert received a lot of damage during the First World War but today it is very neat with a lot of red-brick buildings. It doesn't seem to get a lot of recognition but I think it is alittle gem.

There is a museum of the first world war which is well worth a visit, it is situated next to the cathedral and continues under the streets for several hundred metres.

The town boast three belltowers, the cathedral, the town hall and the station.
