1 rue de L'église: Superb, small B&B near Abbeville

We found this charming Chambres d'hote quite by chance. Heading towards Calais after 2 weeks in the south we decided we would start looking for places from about Amiens. Coming off the motorways we took the N roads roughly in the direction of Boulogne. We checked out one hotel in the centre of Poix but it was dull and featureless and so decided to plod on northwards ever watchful for signs to Chambres d'hote. Having spotted a sign we kept following them, a bit like orienteers following clues, until we found the place and even better they had 2 spare rooms.

It was an old farmhouse, lovingly restored with low slung wooden beams, a huge fireplace and a lovely grand piano in the downstairs reception. We couldn't believe our luck when the owner said the rates for room and breakfast were Euros 50 a night - we were expecting much more.

The bedrooms were extremely clean, well appointed with ensuite facilities and beds very comfortable. Breakfast was equally impressive with fresh proper croissants.

The owners Francis and Francois Guérin clearly love their home and appear to enjoy sharing it with their guests. They very proudly showed us the insert in the Alastair Sawday's book French Bed and Breakfast (9th Edn).

We asked about a place for evening meals and they directed us to a small restaurant about 20 minutes drive away. Unfortunately I cannot remember where it was but the food was good - a 3 course set meal and very French.
