Travel Tips for Péronne

Athies (Between Peronne and Our Route)

by hquittner

The guide book said this little town had an interesting church. So we stopped and looked at it as we went by. Its notable feature is a carved tympanum of the 13C showing the Nativity on the left and the Flight Into Egypt on the right. How did such fine earlt work get in such an out-of-the-way place?

A Quiet Town

"A Short Stop"

Our route from Noyon to Amiens took us near Peronne (pop. 10K) and so we drove in to see what it looked like as our guide book suggested. It indeed had a pleasant town center at the Pl. Louis-Daudre, with a faithfully restored Hotel de Ville (Town Hall). On another edge of the square was the only church that survived WW I, St.-Jean-Batiste. Further off to the west was an old 13C chateau-museum (about daily life in WW I) which we did not visit. We relaxed a little by walking to the Porte de Bretagne and its ramparts, and then we left.

We do not forget Australia

"World War One Battle site"

The Historial de la Grande Guerre is the "must-see" museum in Peronne. Perrone and the building housing the museum was liberated by Australian forces on 2 September 1918.
