Family Visit
by barryg23
My parents came to visit while I was working here. The Boss - aka 'Le Slavedriver' - didn't give me much time off to spend with them but I still managed to fit in a few meals in the nice restaurants of le vieux Angoulême and a day trip to Cognac.

"St Peter cathedral"
The present building was precede by three eatlier churches. We know nothing about he first cathedral which was built after the Edict of Milan. It was destroyed by the Visigoths when Clovis chased them fom the city towards 507. The Frankish king started to rebuild it about 508 and it was completed in 560. This church which possessed a crypt disappeared in 981 when a great fire raised it from thge ruins and it was consecrated in 1015, but it was left to a great prelate, Girad II legate to many popes, to erect hte vast cathedral to be seen today. The work started about 1110 and must have been completed in 1128, hte date of the consecration of the church. Only a few carvings on the facade remain unfinished.During the religious wars the building lost its southern bell tower which was restored in atrocipous tatse by Abadie during the lats century
