Travel Tips for Poitiers

Notre Dame la Grande

by Andrew_W_K

This is one of those places that I'm destined to have bad luck at. When I went for the first time in 1993 the whole building was covered in boarding and scaffolding as a restoration project was under way. When I returned in 2009 a wedding was in progress so I couldn't go in!
What I can tell you though is that it is the best church in Poitiers and one of the finest in all of France.
A mixture of Romanesque and Byzantine in style it dates from the 10th century and has a wonderful facade with it's two conical towers flanking it's sculptured facade.
Alas I cannot tell you about the interior but on my next visit....

The Law Courts Were Once the Ducal Palace (1)

by hquittner

The Law Courts present it Restoration Classical facade but this hides the grand edifice behind and seen best from the r. des Cordeliers. Here in a garden one can be greeted by a statue of Joan of Arc who was first tested here. Beyond is a gabled ancient palatial structure containing the Great Hall with its large fireplaces. This is the imaginative treatment produced by Gui de Dammartin for Jean de Berry. Fireplaces were the only form of heating for living and meeting rooms. Each required a flue and chimney. Think of the grandiose solution at Chambord centuries later. Remember this facade when you see the array of mantels. To the right in this area is the Donjon and if you look further you will find that some of the foundation is built upon remains of Roman walls.

Poitiers

by barryg23

After an unsuccessful attempt to find cheap accommodation in La Rochelle, Poitiers was the next stop on our Inter-rail trip.

We didn't see too much of Poitiers. Our main concern (well my main concern really) was to find somewhere to watch the football game. We arrived here on the day of the Euro 2000 final between Italy and France and, after checking into our hotel, watched the final in an Irish pub off the main square.
