Travel Tips for Poitiers
Roman theater of Veiux-Poitiers
by DSwede
If you are a historical buff, or even if you are not, but fancy a drive through the north country side, Veiux-Poitiers is a scenic point to spend a short time.
The Roman Theater there is in a state of ruins, but there are some displays showing the archeological finds of the area and the more specifically the Ancient Poitiers.
To get here, you optimally need your own car. Drive north of Poitiers to the town of Naintre (highway A10 or D23 or D910). From Naintré, go another 5 minutes. The Veiux-Poitiers site is between the nearby towns of Domine and Chezelle.
Its open part of the year, so check the website for visiting time and prices.
The Cathedral Has Very Ancient Stained Glass (4)
by hquittner
The Cathedral was started at the beginning of the Gothic period before 1180 at the earliest period of stained glass manufacture. The apse and choir were built first and so the glass retroaltar area was finished very soon making it one of the first examples still in its original place. Other glass nearby is also that old. The large window shows a Christ in Glory above a Christ Crucified with Mary and others in attendance. Below are Apostles looking up in reverence and Peter crucified upside down. Our example of the other windows which deal with the major saints is a St. Laurence being broiled alive. The colors in these windows are brilliant.
POITIERS : Middle Age City
by GUYON
"The Poitou Capital"
Poitiers is 340 km from Paris, that means 3h30 by car (motorway A10).
This city gather remains of all ages : from the Romans to the modern time. Especially, there are marvellous halftimbered houses built in the 15e century.
It is also a 21e century city with an university.
The country side around the town is a bit flat and bowring. But if you like wine tasting, you must cross it to try the Haut Poitou wine.
