The Altar
All that remains of the Norman church of the 12th century is the tower that sits somewhat incongruously between modern shop facades on the Rue Saint-Porchaire.
The rest of the church that you cannot see from the street was rebuilt in the 16th century.
On our second morning, before leaving Poitiers, we drove to the southern end of the city to the Church of St.-Hilaire. Much of our trip was to study the Romanesque and our Guide Michelin rated it the second most important site in Poitiers and we agree. The church was rebuilt in the 11C on Gallo-Roman foundations and was the Poitiers pilgrimage site on the Road to Compostela. It had a wooden roof and sustained severe damage from a fire in the 12C. The transept, choir and apse are raised above a crypt and were minimally affected and are essentially unchanged. In 1590 the belfry next to the north transept collapsed and caused more damage to the nave. (The tower base, much shorter, remains). The apse has four radiating chapels and the transepts each contribute another. These with the ambulatory make a fine cascade effect. The present facade was erected in the 19C when the nave was refinished eliminating two bays.There is much primitive sculpture at points on the outside, covered in the next Tip.
Le Chateau de Curzay is a few miles south of Poitiers. While staying here I had one of my most memorable meals. The chef was Yves Labrousse who had once worked at Le Grand Vefour in Paris. Peace and tranquility in the French countryside......je reviens!
