Le 5 janvier 1945, la ville de Royan est pratiquement anéantie par les bombardements alliés.
Royan après sa libération en avril 1945, est un champ de ruines.
Les travaux de déblaiement durent plusieurs années et la reconstruction démarre vraiment en 1949. C’est une affaire nationale dans le cadre du Ministère de la Reconstruction.
