Le Marché de Royan est une pièce maîtresse de l'architecture du Royan des années 50 et un ouvrage qui a toujours fière allure, un demi-siècle après sa construction. Le marché de Royan fait partie des bâtiments clés de la ville avec le Front de mer, le Casino, le Palais des Congrès, l'Eglise.

Le bâtiment a été imaginé par les architectes Louis Simon et André Morisseau et réalisé avec la technique apportée par l'ingénieur René Sarger. Les architectes ont conçu un voile de 52 mètres de diamètre, épais de seulement 8 cm, haut de 10 mètres en son point central. Le toit repose sur treize piliers posés sur une ceinture de béton souterraine.Dans cette corolle en forme de coquille renversée, la lumière pénètre par des parties en verre armé et rayonne vers le sol. Mis en service en 1957, ce bâtiment coquillage a vite emporté l'adhésion des Royannais et des touristes.
