Le Quartier Mazarin
by rickyvilla81
South of the Cours Mirabeau is the old planned estate of the Quartier Mazarin, townhouses for the richer Provencaux, constructed in the name of Cardinal Mazarin in the 17th century. Rue Mazarine and Rue de 4 Septembre meet at the Place des Quatre Dauphins, which features a fountain on which four dolphins pour cool water (see photo). The old buildings of this quarter are not spectacular, but are so well preserved as to be worth a look. Pass through on your way to the Parc Jourdain.
Fountains, fountains - everywhere!

Aix en Provence was built over hot springs and there are fountains everywhere. It is sometimes called the City of a Thousand Fountains and this nickname is well earned. Some of our favorites were the majestic La Rotonde (top of Cours Mirabeau), la fontaine d'Eau Chaude, or Moussue (in the center of Cours Mirabeau), La Fontaine d'Albertas (in Old Town) and La Fontaine des quatre dauphins (in the Marazin quarter).

Jean-Claude Rambot built the lovely Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins at the Place des Quatre Dauphins, in the Mazarin district, in 1667.
Aix en Provence - Great fountain at the Rotonde
by speed4turtles
Aix-en-Provence is full of fountains. Everywhere, throughout the town, fountains big and small bubble and spray and splash.
The Cours Mirabeau has some of the finest: The great fountain (1860) at La Rotonde [top photo], in the Place Général de Gaulle at the bottom end of the "cours", spraying up into the sunlight. The Fountain of 9 Cannons (1691), half way up, bubbles away in the shade [this photo]. Another block up the "cours" is the moss-covered hot-water fountain dating back to 1734, although the 35°C (93°F) spring has been enjoyed for its healing properties for 2000 years [photo, 28 k]. King René's Fountain, at the top of the "cours" was built in the 19th century; the statue is of Roi René holding a bunch of Muscat grapes, which the good king introduced into Provence.
The lovely Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins at the Place des Quatre Dauphins, in the Mazarin district, was built in 1667 by Jean-Claude Rambot.
Vieille Ville. The old town of Aix is packed with shops, markets, museums, religious and architectural sites and historical sites. The terrace cafés on the Place des Précheurs (by the flower market) attract many of the younger locals, with lower prices than those on the Cours Mirabeau.

Can someone tell me how far the airport is from city center of Provence? Does a bus run from airport to town?
Can anyone suggest inexpensive B&B in Provence?
Thanks for the help.

There are shuttle busses to and from Marignane Airport in Marseille to Aix-en-Provence. You can try the link below for more information. I have copied and pasted the schedule from the site, but please check it to verify. As for B&Bs, I have posted two on my Aix page, the Hotel Cardinale and the Quatre Dauphins. An inexpensive, but clean, hotel with absolutely no frills is Hotel Paul. There may be others posted on VT. If you do an Aix destination search and look at the first category you will find a list of hotels. You might also want to look at the right side of the page where the top five Aix contributors are listed and check their pages.
