Enjoy the generous nature
Provence, and whole southern France is such a beautiful place naturewise. There is colourful flowers everywhere, the smell of pines and sea. Get relaxed for an afternoon nap in the mediteranean way with the sound "cigale".

Hi all,
I am planning to visit Antibes for 1 week in mid march with my partner, and our 4 month old baby, as it seems to be not as busy as places like Nice, Cannes, etc. Obivously we'd like to visit those places on the odd day here and there, but as we have the little one in tow now, we'd like to be able to "retreat" to somewhere abit quieter. Or if anyone can suggest, another location, abit quieter, but central to all these places? any info would be extremely appreciated! (ps. we will have a car rental for the week)
thanks all.
Lee.
Antibes is fine. St Raphaël is another one, may be quiter.
Antibes Old Town will be a perfect place to base yourselves.
Antibes would be ideal. I agree that St Raphael would also be good, but a little further away from Nice, Cannes etc. Nice would also be fine, not too busy at all, in my experience. If you're driving, try not to drive into the centre of the towns on the Cote d'Azur, unless absolutely necessary, as it may not make for a stress free vacation. Bus and train links are pretty good all along the coast.

For those who rush by, you won't even notice, but Irina immediately was amazed by the enormous bushes of Aloe that were growing on several places in the old town of Antibes, but especially along the boulevard Amiral de Grasse. This tropical fat-plant prooves the subtropical climat along the Cote d'Azur like nothing else, as it dies immediately after one nocturnal frost.
Dominating a hill on the peninsula of Saint-Roch, the star-shaped Fort Carré is graced by 360 degree views of the surroundings - not surprising for a defensive fortress. The location had been inhabited since ancient times and was the site of the Roman Temple of Mercury. The pagan temple gave way to the Christian church of Saint-Michel and later Saint-Laurent. Due to frequent wars in the 15th and 16th century, a fortress for the protection of Antibes was built on the site of the church and enlarged over time to become the structure we see today. Fort Carré makes a nice backdrop for the port of Antibes and is considered one of the symbols of Antibes. The fortress is open to visitors and contains a museum.
Antibes Food & Flower market.
Terrific bustling market selling fresh local flowers and food... vegetables, fish, herbs etc...
Open every morning except Mon, Sept - May. Open every morning June - August.
There is also a clothes market some days and every thursday a clothes market situated on the rue Fontvieille, behind the post office.
Old Antibes is a magnet for everything from the mildly eccentric to the full-blown clinically certifiable. A cafe table at the Place Nationale or Avenue George Clemenceau guarantees you a ringside seat, (but the price sometimes includes being busked at by a one-tune accordionist armed with a portable Karaoke rythm section).
The chap with Pocohontas as sidekick is living theatre: a gallic Billy Conolly with Frank Zappa facial hair, a nautical striped vest and attitude in spades. Its in the jaunty cocking of the head, the raised eyebrow, the self-assured matching of white, with black and white stripes, with the near full head of greying hair. Wonderful.
Pocahontas is the bit-player, to his peacock. Her beer glass is still three-quarters full, whilst his is down to the last few centimetres. She defers to him to instruct the waiter with their requirements. Her rich flowing black hair constrained into pigtails, so not to compete. Or am I misreading the cues? Who knows.
