From Paris to Antibes, and then Antibes to Spain.. by train?

by torswhite

Hi there,

I am wanting to travel down to Antibes, to stay for a week, and then go onto Spain - I'd love to drive, but think it would be better to train or bus (less responsiblity!!).

Does any one have any suggetsions about transtport to/from this area?

Also - do I need to pre-book accomodation here, or is it okay to wing it? (I'll be there from 10th OCtober 06)

Thanks so much,

Tor.

The train going south from Paris stops to separate into two trains near Avignon and one side goes along the coast to Cannes and Nice. I am not sure if there is a stop in Antibes. If not, stop in Cannes and take a bus. Accomodations are usually available if you arrive before 15:00 since it is past the summer season. Nearby is Juan-les-pins that has many cheezy clubs on the beach with jazz and other music. It's a pricy area so expect to pay quite dearly for everything. If you can negotiate in French, you may get a room for a week at a reduced rate by paying cash (no credit card or travelers checks). I did this to get a room for one month in Cannes and saved 50 percent.

You will reverse your steps (train or bus-train) going back toward Avignon and take the split that goes to Spain.

There is a TGV from Paris ~08:00 to Antibes ~13:00. You will need a seat reservation.

I would wing it, especially for travel in October, and buy the ticket and reservation after I got to France. But many people like to ticket and reserve in advance. Maybe you can do this at TGV.com or one of the French rail sites.

Travel Tips for Antibes

When going to a public swimming pool

by Heinlaid

Don't think that you can swim in normal swimtrunks (type boxer), No, you must use tight speedo's like a gay from the 70's. I felt like Borat's brother. That's because hygien reason, they say????? Still they neither wash or use soap before entering the water.

Though, they (or some) take a shower afterwards, but with their clothes on?? If one tries to take of ones swimming trunks off to wash, an angry woman storms in, but still, about 50 % of the women swimming, are swimming top-less. French people = Strange people.

Swimminig toys for the children are not for use, they are just on display.

Instead we recommend to go to the beach instead, even if it is cold in April.

Stroll around the Yacht Club, see what's in

by NiceLife

There are usually ten or more boats in at any one time - and you are free to walk around to admire them, though don't even think of boarding - strictly no admittance.

Pictured here, in 2003 Paul Allen's 416 ft "Octopus" briefly took the number one position as the world's largest yatch. Costing Allen a mere $200 million she has a permanent crew of 60 people, including several former Navy Seals, two helicopters, seven boats and a remote-controlled vehicle for crawling on the ocean floor. Its "James Bond" interior includes a dry dock for a submarine, which has the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks under water. Microsoft's "accidental zillionnaire" Paul Allen - worth $20bn according to Forbes, third richest man in America - owns three yacht monsters - Octopus, Tatoosh & Méduse.

Nothing stands still. Octopus was toppled from its number one position by Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellisdon's "Rising Sun" - a full 12 metres longer. Paul also owns the magnificent Villa Maryland on the Cap Ferrat, allowing him to host parties during the Cannes Film Festival that allow him to associate with Hollywoods most top celebrities. Not to be outdone, Larry Elisdon parked Rising Sun in the bay off the Croisette during this years Cannes Film Festival (2009) to host bigger parties. You mean you weren't invited?

In the yacht-world size is everything, so no one retains the coveted number one position for long. The Crown Prince of Dubai ordered a 160 metre yatch "Platinum". With oil reaching $140 a barrel the Crown Prince had to find even more extravagent ways to spend those petrodollars. Roman Abramovich then commissioned a new world number one built in Germany, over 300 metres in length. Within weeks of his new commission he was also rumoured to have lost $12bn in the meltdown of the Russian stockmarket, and ex-wife Irina since walked off with a mega divorce settlement including his then largest mega-yacht.

Its not easy being extraordinarily rich is it?

Antibes Old Town Tour

by Tolik

To explore this amazing town you will need a map, take one from the Tourist Information Center at the station.
We start our tour from the harbor. Port Vauban was built in the ancient harbor that has been formed by the natural crescent the rocks make. Vauban was a master architect and builder of fortifications in late medieval times. He designed and built castles and fortresses all over Europe. Fort Carré, one of his first fortresses, was formed in a star- shape with cannons being able to strike at all directions.
Today Fort Carré is the main sight of Antibes and the port Vauban, and the center of Mediterranean yachting. The outer harbor of Port Vauban is home to the beautiful yachts. Locals say that a yacht can be hired at $20-30,000 for the day for the launch party of some film.
But you can enjoy the seascape from one of the high walls that surround the marina, or just a bench in the green park of the harbor itself.

Through the gates in the wall that parts the port Vauban from the houses of the Vielle Ville, the inner center of Antibes, you enter mysterious labyrinth of streets and alleys. Directly along the walls is a long stretched square with many restaurants, cafe's, and ice cream shops. Going through the maze of alleys one eventually reaches either the Place de la Republic or the Place du Safranier. In the middle of the square one finds the traditional French war monument for all those who fell for the motherland. On a neighbor street Rue de Bas-Castellet at number 8, the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzaki wrote his famous book "Zorba, the Greek".
The cobbled alleyways climb up and down the moderately hilly terrain. Here make left towards the high fortifications of old Antibes.

Port Vauban or Antibes Marina

by Stellla

Port Vauban is now one of the biggest yacht marinas in the world. The Marina is home to some of the world's largest and most expensive yachts which sway elegantly along its quays. Its 1,600 moorings make it the largest pleasure port in Europe. It is always nice to walk around to admire what you will never have!!

la Tour Sarrasine

by MM212

Along with the tower of the nearby Château Grimaldi, the Tour Sarrasine was built in the 11th century to provide advance warning of Saracen attacks, from which Antibes had gravely suffered. Both towers were built using stones from the ruins of Roman monuments. This one, adjacent to the Cathedral, is 40 metres high and also serves as the Cathedral's bell tower.
