Travel Tips for Apt
Hill top villages of the Luberon Parc
To the North East and West of Apt lie a scattering of small villages, most of which were built on the tops of the surrounding hills during medieval times.
Not only do they have great views, but most are very pretty places to walk round. Some even could be described as sublimely beautiful (if you were in the right mood).
Very close to Apt is the village of Saignon - go and take a look because its lovely. If you like it, there are about fifteen others to go check out. Particularly recommended are Bonnieux, Gordes, Venasque, St Saturnin, and Boux. They all have accommodation and some top class restaraunts.
Hike to Boux!
Apt is a great base for hikers and bikers. So gear up and get ready to cycle around! You can get maps from the tourist office. If you are an avid hiker, travel as far as you can!
I wasn't so ambitious then, so I headed for the nearest village, Boux, 8km from Apt. Apt is one of the lowest base in the Luberon region, so it's up up and away. Just follow the signs on various landmarks and enjoy a great scenery! Sweet lavander smells filter through the air and that makes it a pleasant hike. All I can tell you is open up all your senses.
It's a 3 hour hike there and when you get there, you can see lavander fields. You may want to approach the locals and talk to them (apparently most of them don't speak english, and I had to use the universal sign language, and with my french-phrase book in hand). The locals here are very warm and friendly though. It's a very quiet village, and there's a small hotel there too.
Once there, you might be keen to visit fort de boux (which i didn't manage to find, so perhaps you can share with me if you have been there).
Apparently I was too tired to walk back to Apt, so I hitched a ride back (real potential danger here, but glad I made it safely back!)
Apt and its market
Apt is a nice little town located in the Luberon. It is a good starting point if you want to explore the famous "perched villages" of the regions such as : Bonnieux, Menerbes, Lacoste, Opede...
Don't miss the market on Saturday morning !
More than Just a Sleepy Town in Provence
"Apt: Full of Pleasant Surprises"
This was the closest town to our rented villa and we took it for granted until the second week. At that point we discovered its many non-touristy shopping streets, twice weekly farmer's markets, flowered walkways and home of two of the most famous jam-makers in France! Defienitely stop here to do your shopping, as the prices are much lower than elsewhere in the more frequented and glitzy places in Provence.
"don't believe the guide book"
Poor old Apt gets a bit of a slating in the Lonely Planet guide. OK, maybe it hasn't got extensive roman ruins, a stretch of coastline, or been linked to famous artists - but Apt is a nice place.
We spent a couple of days here and really enjoyed it for what it is - a sizeable and relaxed market town, that is distinctly French with Arab influences.
The Saturday market was excellant, and there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaraunts to explore, with people-watching being high on the list. It doesn't have glamour, but it's Real.
We had a hire car with us, and took the opportunity to drive up to some of the surrounding hill top villages. They are Beautiful (see the linked sections).
