Excellent Eclectic Enterprise

Unique Quality: A wonderful three nights in a great 4star + Hotel in a delightfull square with all the hustle a bustle of this great French town. A cross between ' Out of Africa' and 'Casablanca' with great decor service and informality. Christine our host is wonderfull and Madame ? the owner astute in her dream.
By no means a standard corporate Hotel but exciting proffesional and great fun , yet sophisticated and relaxing. The Bistro food eaten in the square on the Terrace or in the restaurant was very good although the menu does not seem to change?

Excellent Staff and Central Location

Eccentric, with much personality. If you must have a new, modern hotel, this is not for you, but:

I recommend this hotel for 4 reasons:

- It's historic character;
- the location right on the Forum overlooking Cafe van Gogh;
- the food (Brasserie du Nord-Pinus ) and most of all,
- for the wonderful and extremely helpful lady who resides just to the right of the lobby as the concierge.

If you speak a little polite French to her, she is so kind, helpful, knowledgeable and professional (at least she was to me), she alone makes staying at Nord-Pinus worth it.

A standard room in 2008 is now about 160 Euros (superiore ~ 230 EU), and about 17 Euros / day to park a car in the garage.

As a special treat, for between 300 and 400 Euros/night they have a unique "bullfighter" suite/apartment. Many bullfighters and artists (Picasso) have stayed here.

Unique Quality: See above. A quick story:

One evening, having a tough time picking out a good, non touristy restaurant near the forum I stopped in to speak with her (the concierge @ Hotel Nord-Pinus) and asked her opinion.

Even though I was not staying there at the time, she acknowledged and helped me with my poor french, offered her suggestions, and when she saw I was confused by her directions, she left the desk and took me BY THE ARM directly (about 5 streets total) to her 2 favorite restaurants (they were both excellent).

I am going to pay extra for a terrace room @ Nord Pinus next time I return to Arles, just because of her.
Madame, vous êtes tres aimable, et gentile! Nord-Pinus is privileged to have her working there.

Parking note: If you drove to Arles, driving your car in&out of the old city & parking can be an adventure.

ps... Check out the fotos all over the hotel of guests that have stayed there... especially the Helmut Newton bw nude of Charlotte Rampling taken in the Nord Pinus Grey Room.... woof..

More about Grand Hotel Nord-Pinus

Highly recommended and in the Hotel

by davequ about Brasserie du Nord-Pinus

Food here is very good. The hotel is excellent with nice suites and a helpful staff.
Beautiful interior as well.
I recommend Nord P for hotel and for meals.
Location is right on the forum, can be a little noisy (motos) early evenings fri & sat night during high season. Seasonal menu keeps changing.
Order whatever is fresh, seasonal, recommended.

Another recommended place close by for lunch & dinner with buffet/smorgasboard and good plats is L'Affenage, (a "fireplace grill") at 4 rue Moliere. tel 0490960767

by davequ about La Gueule du Loup

La Gueule du Loup on rue des Arenes is a small but excellent restaurant in old city center run by a family (couple) named Allard.

Well-prepared, thought out menu and good food with a personal touch.

Thanks again to the kind lady who is the concierge at Hotel Nord Pinus on the forum
for her recommendation and personally walking me down to this place. Try the monkfish & squid in saffron or the filet of bull braised in red wine.
Good duck also.

Highly recommended: Here's a MAP

Where to stay in Arles?

by robnad

After reading numerous hotel reviews (all with a few not too pleasant things to say) I am more confused than ever. Has anyone stayed at Hotel Grans Nord-Pinus, Hotel Calendal or Hotel d'Arlatan? How do they compare? Would you suggest any of these? We'd like a central location. THANKS!!!

The hotels belonging to the chain Logis de France are good.

Here's a quick link to 5 of those Logis de France hotels (2 star):

I have an Arles hotel tip on my Arle pages. If you have any questions, after reading it, I'd try to answer them.
