by RBLT
My wife & I are staying in the area June 23-26. Are there scheduled bullfights at the arena? If so, is it necessary to buy tickets in advance?
thank you, RL

There are no bullfights in Arles in June - only Easter and second weekend in September. The other major centre, Nimes also has 2 at the end of May and half way through September. Tickets in advance are only essential if you want to sit in the shade. Many smaller bullfights exist in other places. These are only advertised locally and it is seldom necessary to book in advance and the rings are not big enough to offer much shade anyway!
Travel Tips for Arles
Les Alyscamps
by Lady_Mystique
In October 1888 he came here with Paul Gauguin to paint the path.
His paintings had no historical meaning :
"I did two studies of falling leaves on a path lined with poplars", wrote the artist.
The paintings simply represent a fall scene.
Van Gogh set up his easel on the bank separating the Alyscamps from the Craponne Canal.
This explains the high viewpoint and the presence of both the path and the canal bank in the painting.

Roman amphitheatre
by lashr1999
The Roman amphitheatre was built in 90 AD. Now, events such as bullfights are held inside the amphitheatre. After seeing this, walk around the city there are plenty of off the way places to get lost and enjoy.
