Église St-Trophime by aliante1981
On the east side of the square, this church's a fine combination of austere Romanesque exterior and Gothic cloisters (though there are Romanesque influences in the cloisters as well). Its12th-century portal is said to be one of the finest achievements of the southern Romanesque style. In the pediment, Christ is surrounded by the symbols of the Evangelists. Frederick Barbarossa was crowned king of Arles on this site in 1178. The cloister is noted for its medieval carvings, which are remarkably fine for the time when they were created.
The official visit hours (from 9 in the morning till 7 in the evening) are somewhat unpredictable, for they have a tendency to change at the will of the custodial staff. Admission fee is to be paid, though it?s rather modest and a visit to the interior is well worth 2.5 Euro for adults, 1.5 for children under 12 years old and students.
