Language immersion schools in the area

by ephan

I want to visit Avignon -- or somewhere in Provence -- to attend a French language school. Je parle la langue un peu and wish to improve. Does anyone have recommendations or know where I should look?

Merci. Stephan

I completely agree with Fugu. The town of Aix is very pleasant and lively. The University is excellent. Université de Provence is both in Marseille (Sciences) and Aix (Literature and languages). What interest you is organised in Aix. They organise "cours de Français langue étrangère", for foreign visiting students. Look at the following links :

and

I hope that will help.

Travel Tips for Avignon

A place for crowds

by rexvaughan

This huge plaza in front of the Palais is usually teeming with people. It is a great place for lunch or a drink or snack and listen to music from various street entertainers. When we were there we heard a good musical group from the Andes (I don't know how they ended up here). The plaza was also used for huge crowds whenever they consecrated a new pope. I read one account that told how many thousands of cattle, pigs, chickens, potatos, etc. were required for the banquet. It was a staggering amount. Sit and recall the historic events that this beautiful place has hosted.

Leaving a Pourboire (tipping)

Service charges are included on all restaurant bills at a cost of between 10 and 15 percent. Extra tips are accepted of course if you have received above good service. s fair to add a little more if the meal and service has been exceptional. Taxi drivers expect tips of about 10 percent of the fare. Hairdressers will expect about 10% also. Porters, doormen and room service can be offered a small gratuity.

By train, car... or....??? ...

By train, car... or....??? :-)) Your choice.

There is no bus or shuttle service to the Town center and if you're thinking of hailing a cab, it would cost around 100-150 French francs. Avignon Airport is approximately 8KM away from the town center.... just in case you're wondering.

The Saint Bénezet Bridge

by sirgaw

Better known as the Bridge of Avignon it is a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site. Construction started in 1177 and the bridge was added to and used until a flood washed away some of the bridge in 1633.

There is an interpretive centre and a kids zone featuring the famous nursery rhyme where a CD can be made - fun for adults too

A combined entrance fee to both the Papal Palace and the Bridge of Avignon is available - cost in high season 11.50 € or 9 € for seniors - audio guide (a must) included

Musee Lapidaire

by roamer61

This museum, located in a former 17th Century Jesuit College, houses a local collection of antiquities from Egypt, Greece and Rome as well as numerous local peices. One particular item of interest is this rather large Roman Funerary Stela depicting a wagon (see picture).
