'Le cloitre Saint Louis'

Hotel 'Le cloitre Saint Louis' ****
Rather expensive.

Unique Quality: The Hotel is situated in an old Jesuits Cloister and was renovated in 1990. It combines mordern design with ancient history. The hotel has 80 spacious rooms, an open-air pool and sun terrace. Many rooms has a view onto the marvellous Cloister courtyard. The hotel is located near the old city center.

We stayed at this small but...

We stayed at this small but lovely hotel here in Avignon called - Hôtel Clarion Cloître Saint Louis. And the ultimate plus-point that made us choose this hotel was its close proximity to the city center. Very important!

Still at the Hôtel Clarion...

Still at the Hôtel Clarion Cloître Saint Louis here in Avignon.... Situated in a historical building dating back to the 16th century, this 4-star hotel was formerly a religious school for Jesuits! Most of the hotel rooms are found in the ancient cloister area.

Photo Below: The unheated outdoor pool... (opened only in summer).
Can't remember!! ;-(( Maybe you'd like to call the hotel to enquire, that is if you're interested enough.

Elegant, roomy, and convenient

We spent five (5) nights at the Clarion Cloitre Saint Louis Hotel. We found the staff friendly and helpful, our room and the public areas immaculately clean, the food outstanding, and the location ideal -- a block in from the town's main thoroughfare and a relatively short walk to the Palais des Papes. (The hotel is near the point at which the cours Jean-Juarés becomes the rue de la République.)

Our room was in the old (or original cloitre) section. Rooms in the new, modern wing are cheaper and said to be far less spacious and comfortable.

Unique Quality: Excellent, gourmet-quality restaurant with an especially lavish breakfast (at 16€, or about US$19 per person).

One free high-speed computer just off the reception area; free wifi throughout the hotel.

Rooftop (open air) pool.

The entire hotel is non-smoking (French law now mandates that hotels be non-smoking, but the law is widely ignored); ashtrays are provided, however, in the large garden terrace.

Loved This Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member naomh

Beautiful location within the old city and walking distance to the major attractions (Popes Palace, etc). Room very nice, relatively spacious, comfortable, and clean. Service very friendly! Breakfast very good.

Only problem I had was finding the hotel. Seemed to take forever up and down very narrow streets trying to follow a map I had printed out from mapquest and which was obviously not very accurate. Have the hotel fax you their map with street by street directions before you leave.

Ancient and Modern

by TripAdvisor Member RedFlag

A bit like Avignon itself, this hotel embodies the ancient and the modern alongside each other. The restaurant and breakfast room is under the arches of an old cloister, while the North wing is a very modern extension with strong styling reminiscent of 1980s style, but without looking naff or dated. The hotel staff were efficient and helpful and the restaurant was impressive. Breakfast was €16 extra but was a pretty good buffet, including a boil-your-own egg boiler (but for €16 I thought they could have boiled it for me). The room was very clean and well-kept and had full length sliding glass doors leading onto a patio with table and chairs facing out onto a second courtyard, so it felt very comfortable when relaxing in the room. The eighties styling is a bit impersonal but it's still a very attractive option.

good choice for Avignon

by TripAdvisor Member almas

My daughter and I stayed at the Cloitre St Louis for 2 nights. Our room was a jardiniere room, overlooking the central courtyard. The room was large, clean with a modern shower/bathtub and a separate toilet. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of reading light. There was a safe and minibar in the room. The staff was pleasant. We did not eat in the hotel but ordered room service, which came quickly but was pricey. The hotel is located directly inside the town's gates, about a 5 min walk from the train station (Avignon central). It is a 15 min walk from the pope's palace. In March however the town closes down after 7, and walking back from dinner at 10, even down the main street, felt unsafe. My daughter lives in Paris and is used to seeing regular peopole on the streets at all hours of the day -- in Avignon only street people/beggars are out at night.

Very Nice

Reviews are pretty accurate.

I would add...
There are a variety of rooms. Since I was there for just one night with an excellent I got on Clarion's website I felt no need to complain or upgrade my standard room with no view: there seem to be 4 per floor the rest are either the superior rooms looking out at the cloister courtyard (music heard in while crossing the courtyard upon arrival suggests the building opposite may have a music school)or the junior suites in the addition with the weird louvered window indoor/ outdoor "balconies" that face another courtyard. My room was very modern and roomy. Most walls in the bathroom were mirrors, creating an infinity effect in the shower, so if you don't like seeing yourself nude.....

Staff was very pleasant and helpful. Parking in low season (about to end) was free.

Buffet breakfast for 16euro was a good spread and the setting was lovely.

Location is good. Arrival by car is a little tricky. Get the hotel to fax you a little map so you can pull right into the parking entrance which is on a completly different street than the hotel front entrance.

Fantastic location

by TripAdvisor Member londonlovers

Wonderful hotel. The location really is ideal for both the centre and the SNCF station and bus to the TGV station just outside town. Great little pool on the roof too- real bonus on a hot day! Courtyard is peaceful, delux rooms are worth it for the view. Look on their website for some great deals - we did and loved it!
