Visit the Office de Tourisme

by leics

The Avignon Office de Tourisme is at 41, Cours Jean Jaures (which leads directly from Avignon Centre station to the town).

It's worth seeking it out, and popping in. As with all such offices, they'll give you a map of the town but, more importantly, they'll also give you an 'Avignon Pass'. This is a little booklet which gives reduced entrance to many of the places you might want to visit: the Pont d'Avignon, Plais des Papes etc.

Opening times:

April to October :
Monday to Saturday
9am - 5pm.
Sunday and bank holidays 9:45am - 5pm

July :

getting from Avignon airport to the TGV station

by mudoffice

Does anyone know the best way to get from Avignon airport to the TGV station? I'm flying in to Avignon and travelling on to Marseilles... Thanks

Re: getting from Avignon airport to the TGV station

From a website

There is no public transportation serving the Avignon Airport. There is however taxi service. The is cost is 15 to 20 euros (to the city)

The TGV station is about the same distance. Looks like a taxi is your only option.

Shame, as the TGV line goes past the airport!

Check your train times as some of the trains between Avignon and Marseille leave from the 'old' station in the city centre, Avignon Centre.

I think you will need a taxi from the airport to the TGV station in Avignon. I can find on information on any other public transport serving this airport (it's about 6 miles away).

Some TGV trains leave from Avignon Centre station, so be sure you know which station you need.

St. Remy de Provence

by orchid49

How can I go to St. Remy de Provence from Avignon: by bus or by train ? I do not rent a car.

Also to L'isle sur la Sorque from Avignon.

Thanks.

I'm also planning a trip to Provence during late April.

I understand that there is no train to St Remy, not sure if there is a bus. There is excursion to many towns in Provence area. Please check this website http://www.self-voyages.fr/. I think it is expensive.

For L'Isle sur la Sorge, you can take the train from Avignon Centre to the station " L'ISLE FONTAINE DE VAUCLUSE". It takes about 25 mins.

Leaving Avignon Area

by jillianq222

In May we will be traveling from Avignon down to Tossa de Mar in Spain. Without a car, can you suggest the best way to reach our destination? Thank you!

Re: Leaving Avignon Area

by JLBG

Go to http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/
There is an english version but it is not always as friendly as the french version. If not satisfactory, go back to the french.

You can search for either Avignon to Barcelona (south to Tossa de Mar) or Avignon to Perpignan, which is on the way (north to Tossa de Mar). I suppose that Barcelona would be easier.

Caution, if you use the SNCF website in Fench, Barcelona is "Barcelone".

Re: Leaving Avignon Area

by JLBG

I have found a better way. Use the SNCF website to go from Avignon to Girona. For example, this is what you will get for a travel today:

ALLER disponible pour le Jeudi 03/04
Durée : 06h33
AVIGNON CENTRE 10h39
PORT BOU ESPAGNE 14h28

PORT BOU ESPAGNE 16h12
GIRONA 17h12

Girona is not far from Tossa de Mar. You will certainely find local busses.

Travel Tips for Avignon

Go horse back riding in...

by BEETLE_VERTE

Go horse back riding in Camargue. The mix of your white horse, the black bulls and the pink flamingos on the salt marshes is of another world! Traditionnaly, the bulls were raise for the corrida and the 'cowboys' used their big white horse to take care of them. Go back in time on your horsy and live your dream of becoming a cowboy!!!

Palais des Papes

by agarcia

A little bit of culture... for a change. The Popes former residence will be probably your main reason for visiting Avignon. It is certainly an impressive place, and trying to imagine the decadent lives that the Popes lived there is a notable experience... the immense halls, the enormous kitchen in with so many food were prepared for the plump pontiffs while the people was starving, the patio in which so many executions were committed... ahhh, the good old Dark Ages :-).

Basic admission includes an audio guide and costs 10€, witch is (imho) a little bit more of what the visit worth. At the palace entrance you can buy the general ticket or enhance your touristy experience by acquiring also a ticket for visiting the famous, unfinished and boring Avignon bridge. :-p

Notre Dame des Doms

by keeweechic

Notre Dame des Doms started out as a monument of Roman Provencal art and after many transformations and renovations, it has become an imposing and richly ornate building. The statue of the Virgin is 6 metres high, weighing in at 4 and a half tons.
