visit a farm in Avignon or Aix

by caro36

Hi there,
End of August we will be in Aix en Provence and in Avignon for some days. We would love to visit a farm (goat cheese?)- a cheese tasting would be great ! or ducks/goose or other animals. Or an olive oil mill..... Does someone have some tips or addresses ? Preferably near one of the cities as we are by bike (and I do not really want to cycle 20 kilometres in the hot weather)...
Thank you ! Caro

If you will be out and about on your bike in the countryside look out for signs that say "Bienvenue a la ferme".

They may also invite you to taste their produce "Degustation" nos vins, or Fromage - maybe de chevre.( sorry no accents)

If you will not be on the road a lot the best thing is to go to the Tourist Office wherever you are staying and ask for a list of farms that are open to visitors.
Best of luck and have a great trip!

Yep, you'll see plenty of little signs by the side of the road saying "Dégustation" (=tasting) of whatever: wine, cheese...
Often one sees "Miel" (honey).

And "produits artisanaux" (or any phrase with "artisanal") means "traditionally made" or "made on the farm/locally".

I bet the tourist office in Avignon has a nice brochure with locally made products and where they can be bought. Thus far I've always found them all over the country. The French are way too proud of their produce not to make them known ;-)

A couple of things I found last October when staying in Avignon which might help (or not):

Traffic in Avignon is manic. I'd imagine my chances of cycling out of the city alive would have been pretty small. It's a lovely place, and the surrouding countryside will be great for cycling, but getting in and out of the town will be a different matter.

Public transport out of Avignon is OK to larger places but if you wanted to try the bus instead, you're quite limited. I wanted to visit Chateauneuf-du-Pape and ended up having to walk the 3 miles each way from the nearest bus stop. It was a hot day and a rucksack full of wine was heavy :-) I asked if there were any taxis. I might as well have asked for an elephant ride.

There are, at a price, loads of wine and cheese tours advertised from Avignon. I felt they were a bit expensive but after a 6 mile walk I wasn't so sure.

As I write this, the thought of cycling and staying in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, or one of the nearby villages, for a night or two seems incredibly appealing...

Read the book:'The girl from...

by Tertius

Read the book:
'The girl from Avignon' before going there.
I actually do not know if it was ever translated into English (I read it in Afrikaans), and I know it is available in French.
There was also a French TV programme in the early eighties based on the book.
France never seemed romantic - until I got to Avignon.

Refer hint below that the books "Constace" and Livia" are also must reads.

Green Wall

by leics

I loved this.

One of the walls of Les Halles, the indoor market building, is entirely covered in plants.

At first, from a distance, I thought it was painted. then I thought it was fake/3D. Then I saw the plants moving in the breeze and realised they were real.

Very, very clever. Very effective, and very pleasing to the eye in the middle of a busy town.

Visit The Cathedral Notre Dame des Doms

by hquittner

The Cathedral was built between 1140-60 upon remains of an older church. During the 14C, when the Popes were in Avignon, fine frescos by Simone Martini were created upon the aislwer which has beeb extee-less walls. These slowly deteriorated and were removed to the Papal Palace in the 20C. Side chapels were added to the church in the 14-16C and the interior was baroqued shortly after. There is an early Romanesque porch and above it is a tower that was extended in the 15C and in 1859 topped by a large statue of the Virgin.

Lokk around the city

by mallyak

As you walk along the main street cours Jean Jaures, the tourist office is on the right side, at number 41. On this street you’ll also find lots of cafes and eating establishments and we had dinner at one of theDeli restaurants. Whilst the window display of food looked fabulous, unfortunately the meal itself was not as good as we expected.
