Where should I stay in South France- by Nice?

by dsgw25

I am traveling to south france via paris at the end of July. I have 5 days and would like to know the best place to stay. I want great beaches, shopping and nighlife- without paying a million dollars a night for a hotel. Which area would you recommend staying? I see there is cannes, nice, monaco..?? any must sees or hotel recommendations? three girls in our early 30's

I stayed at a great little hotel in Cannes in June last year for around EUR50 per night. It was called the Little Palace and is right across the road from the main Train Station and right in the middle of the shopping, restaurants and nightlife and two hundred metres from the beach which is lovely. There are also great little budget hotels in Nice and once again plenty of restaurants, shopping and nightlife - only drawback is the beach is all pebbles, no sand like in Cannes. Monaco is expensive to stay at but lovely to visit for a quick day trip from Nice or Cannes. Trains go regularly. (about every 20-30 minutes. I have stayed in Nice and I have stayed in Cannes and really liked both. They are all so close together and the trains are so good and quick and regular, that it really doesn't matter which one you choose. I would guess at Cannes for 3 X 30yr old girls as it is a bit more classy than Nice but then again Nice is much bigger. Any way you choose, you can't go wrong.

I was going to make some observations of my own but I've just read Maryimelda's reply and agree totally with everything she has said.

Just out of Nice is a lovely spot called Villefranche Sur Mer (where the cruise ships anchor). It has a small beach and is sheltered. There are some nice bars/restaurants by the waters edge. You could hop off the train on your way to/from Monaco if you like.

Travel Tips for Cannes

Aspirin!

by Greenwood143

Light backpack. Dress casually, (as a tourist, it's easier to get in clubs). Bring Aspirin, Tylenol or Advil: whatever works for you. Because a night out in Cannes will make you remind it the next day. Those pills are mandatory.

Iles de Lerins

by Tolik

The "Iles de Lérins" is a small archipelago just off the coast of Cannes and part of the commune of Cannes. The archipelago has the two main islands of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat and the two micro-islands of Tradelière and St-Féréol. Boat excursions to the islands leave from Cannes (15 minutes to Saint-Honorat and 30 minutes to Sainte-Marguerite). Ile Sainte-Marguerite is the larger, and nearer, island. The island is covered by a lovely forest of Allepo pine and eucalyptus, with wide paths criss-crossing the length and breadth. The port area, where the ferry lands, has cafés and restaurants, and it's a short walk to the Fort Royal where you can see the now-bare little cell where the Man in the Iron Mask was incarcerated. Ile Saint-Honorat is the smaller, further, island, an additional 15 minutes by boat from the ferry landing of Sainte-Marguerite. Although small, the walks are still nice, and there's the Cisterian abbey to visit, which includes a gift shop of locally produced products.

Old town Cannes - Le Suquet

by NiceLife

Wander the lanes and browse the little boutiques of the old town, set behind the Port. Le Suquet is crowned by a large church popular for weddings, a museum of ethnic bits and bobs in which the staff enjoy a very very long lunchtime closure. The panorama is probably the best in Cannes - looking out over the Palais des Festivals and the Croisette (often used as a backdrop for fashion photoshoots) all the way out to the Iles des Lerins, and westerly out to the Esterel.

There are a good number of mid-price restaurants on the upper approach roads which seem popular with locals as well as the odd tourist, though opening hours may be somewhat erratic. The main lower approaches from the Croisette host some very pricey restaurants popular with the laptop-and-blackberry crowd during conferences.

Cannes - a place to rub shoulders with celebrities

"Cannes - a place to rub shoulders with celebrities"

Cannes is famous for the annual Cannes Film Festival. If you happen to be in Cannes during the Festival, you could spot your favourite Hollywood star sunbathing on the beach or sipping a cocktail on the terrace of the Carlton Hotel.
