Beach in Cannes

Beaches of Cannes are famous so they are overcrowded on summer. So if you have a chance to escape from the centre and find less crowded beach, do it. At least, there's a nice island Sainte-Marguerite not far from Cannes, you have just to buy the ticket and take a boat in Cannes' port. Les Iles de Lérins. (the islands close to Cannes

Once you've tired of the glitter and all in Cannes, it doesn't take long to get away from it all.

VISIT Les iles de lerins !!! :o)

Less than half an hour’s boat trip away, across the bay from Cannes, the Lérins Islands are the most interesting excursion from the port.

The first contact with the island is quite suprising. After the noise of the port of Cannes, the crowd on the boat during the crossing, the island of Lérins is suddenly a peaceful world where the sceneries are beautiful.

The "Iles de Lérins" is a small archipelago just off the coast of Cannes and part of the commune of Cannes. The archipelago has the two main islands of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat.
The Ile Saint-Honorat has a Mediterranean coastal forest of native pine, eucalyptus and cypress trees.

It was on the island of Sainte-Marguerite that the “Man in the Iron Mask”, made famous by Alexandre Dumas, he spent eleven years in the prison of the Isle of Sainte-Marguerite.

Ensigns of yachts.

It was interesting to look at the ensigns of the racing yachts moored in the Vieux-Port as these flags flown at the stern of a boat indicate its nationality.
Most of them flow the "Red Ensign" (photo 2) from the British civilian vessels and the variations belonging to Commonwealth countries. The Red Ensign is a red flag with the Union Flag in the canton (the upper corner next the staff).
A remakable ensign often met on these racing yachts and also on the luxus motor yachts is that of the Isle of Man with the three conjoined legs called "triskelion", the symbol of Man (photo 1). The "triskelion" symbol goes back to the ancient Greek and is also found in the Norse mythology where it was a symbol of the movement of the sun through the heavens.
I suppose that nowadays the choice of this ensign of the Isle of Man, a Crown dependency, has some fiscal reasons what explains that there were more ensigns of "fiscal heavens" than of "fiscal hells" on the yachts.

About 125 years B.C. Romans started to organize militaries camps on Azure beach and in Provence. Some of them have begun cities - Arles, Aix, Nime and Orange. So Cannes has begun as the settlement on that place, where it is situated right now.

The monastery was established in the X-th century on one of two islands Lerens in front of Cannes. During six hundred years the territory opposite to the island belonged to this monastery. On the second island the royal fort which has been transformed into prison has been constructed.

In 1587 there lived within 17 years the prisoner whom we know from Dumas as "an iron mask". Who was he - the cousin of Lui XIV, the Italian diplomat, or Moliere? Anybody has not found it out. It is known only, that actually he carried not iron, but a velveteen mask. In 1635-1638 the struggle between Spain and empire of Gabsburg was fastened for islands. Once again military actions were developed later hundred years when France in the union with Bavaria, Saxony and Spain was at war with Austria and England.
